Show FRENCH SENTIMENT. The present strained relations between be-tween Germany and France recalls a tender story of the visit of tho Gorman Empress to a national school in Alsace, one of the provinces which was seised by Germany from Franco as a result cf the war a generation ago. Being greatly pleased with tho nlort intelligence of tho pupils, the EmprcsB promised to extend any favor which was In her power to grant. Tho head of one of the classes, a girl of twelve years, a trombllng little maid, arose and, In a pathetic voice, said: ''I beg you, then, Madam, that you will permit French to be taught In this school." Although tho request and Us concession conces-sion amounted to lese majesto, the Empress Em-press kept her word, and for the first time since Franco yielded this province to hor conqueror, the language of tho people will bo taught In school to the qhildren of tho people. And, too, the situation is a reminder that monuments for the provinces of Franco stand in the Placo do la Concorde Con-corde In Paris, and that upon the monuments mon-uments for Alsaco and Lorraine there always hang wreaths of flowers and Immortelles, placed there by the French people, who go dally to renew their pledge to redeem the lost provinces. |
