Show THE NEWS AND LIBEL. The Deseret News is nnxlous to havo the libel law of this State "amended and Improved." Ever since a Jury found that the charges of improper conduct in publlo position made by The Tribune against tho son-in-law of the editor of the DeBerot News were true, the church organ has been greatly great-ly agitated. It would like to havo a law under which Its favorite crimes of polygamy and public boodling could be conducted without criticism from the press. All that its pet criminals ask Is to be let alone let alone entirely; neither arraigned for their lawbreak-Ing lawbreak-Ing nor subjected to reprehension by the press or tho citizenship of the community. com-munity. The wish of tho News may be easily granted, provided tho church can select a pliant Legislature once more. In that case the proposed now law can be drafted In the office of the hierarchy and the Legislature can bo commanded to pass the same without amendment, and tho Governor will be instructed to sign It. And so will It be If the church owns the Legislature and so commands that body. We suggest to the Deseret News that the hierarchy should couch tho bill In very clever language, otherwise the Deseret News, which has defamed the good Women of Utah and the Nation, which has outrageously libelled and Insulted the Christian ministry of the land, may be caught n its own toils. When It insinuates that Journalism needs checking for criticising professors profess-ors of religion, it makes a vivid reflection re-flection upon Us own course throughout through-out tho yenrs. No Infamy has boon beyond be-yond the Deseret News In Its treatment of the preachers of other faiths; and In Its comment upon the Women of the United States, who have worked for the purity of the home and the dignity of the Government, It has descended to a depth far below anything ever witnessed elsewhere In American newspaper news-paper life. Apropos of the Deseret News's Insults In-sults to the Women of this country, It Is Interesting to note by the testimony of Apostle Charles W. Penrose, the editor of the church organ, what Is his real attitude toward the gentler sexto sex-to what extent he respects them and seeks to assure a recocnltlon of their dignity in the world. Following Is a part of "'his' testimony given before the Senate Committee on Privileges and Elections nt Washington. Mr. Taylor Aro you a polygamlst? Mr. Penrose Yob, sir. Mr. Taylor How many wives havo you? Mr. Penrose My legal wlfo Is dead, and I havo two wlvcfl whom I recognize as my plural wives. Mr. Tuylor So thnl you havo not been married, aH tho law delinks marriage you undorslnnd what 1 moan by that to. either of your present wives? Mr. Penrose No. |
