Show FORMER RECTOR OFST. MARK'S CATHEDRAL DEAD Rev. R. M. Kirby, Whose Monument Monu-ment is Rowland Hall, Passes Away. Rev. II. M. Kirby, for a number of years rector of St. Mark's cathedral In this city, died suddenly at his home In Pottsdnm, .'. Y., yesterday. A telegram announcing hl3 death wns received yesterday yes-terday afternoon by George Y. Wallace, who had been a warm personnl friend of Rev. Mr. Kirby for moro than thirty years. Called to St. Mark's. Upon the death of Rev. Mr. Fowler, who wns killed in a railroad accident about 1STC, Rev. Mr, Kirby was called to St. Mark's cathedral. He was the rector of the church for nearly or quite ten years, and then removed to Potts-dam, Potts-dam, where ho hns alnco mado his homo. Three years after coming to this city Rev. Mr Kirby was married In the East, he nnd his wlfo mnklng their home hero for several years after their murrlage. Mrs. Kirby died some ten years ago, leaving two sons and two daughters, who aro still living. His Monument Rowland Hall. Ono of tho Instlng monuments to Rev. Mr. Klrby's memory In this city, although al-though it does not bear his name, is Rowland Hall. The mother, of his llrBt wife gave .the funds to erect a llttlng memorial me-morial to her daughter, Vlrglna Rowlund, and Rev. Mr. Kirby decided to use the funds to found a school for girls. A bronze tablet bearing the name of Virginia Vir-ginia Rowland and the year of tho founding found-ing of the school Is found In one of tho main halls of the building. Managed St. Mark's Hospital. Rev. Mr. Kirby was also one of the enthusiastic workers In tho early days of St. Mark's hospital and during the greater part of his recldencc here managed man-aged tho affairs of that Institution. With BIsIiod Tuttle nnd tho late Dr. Hamilton Hamil-ton he worked untiringly for the then small hospital, but during a visit here some four years ago had the pleasure of seeing at lenst a part of the fruits of his labor In the splendid Institution which has grown up from tho small frame houses which answered the purposes of a hospital for so many years. No Details of Death. The telegram received "Wednesday by Mr. "Walluce gave no particulars as to tho cause of Rev. Mr. Klrby's death. It was from one of tho Kirby boys and said simply "Fnther died suddenly today." It Is presumed by Mr. Wallace thai the burial will take place at Pottsdam. Known to Old Residents. The deceased rector was known to all the old residents of Salt Lake, by whom he wns greatly loved. News of his death will come as a personal bereavement to many of -these and the deepest sympathy will do out to his sons and daughters In their loss. |
