Bernard Schulte and wife of New York City were attacked at Mcchanlcsvillo last night and probably fatally Injured by W. Curtis, a negro, who was today shot and killed In Saratoga while resisting arrest. Felled Him With Lead Pipe. Mr. Schulto camo to Mechanlcsvlllc recently re-cently to take temporary .charge of tho Episcopalian church. Early last evening Curtis presented himself at tho door of the rectory and asked for a drink of water. wa-ter. Mr. bchulte was In the act of turning turn-ing back to get tho water whon tho negro felled the clergyman with a pleco of lead pipe, rendering him unconscious. Beats Clergyman's Wife. Mrs. Schulte appeared a moment later and tho negro struck her down. Ho beat l.er with tho lead pipe. Indicting probablv fatal Injuries. The clergyman and his wife, lying unconscious and covered with blood, wcro discovered by neighbors. Officer. Shoots to Kill. A policeman found Curtis today In a negro colony at Saratoga and arrested him. The negro, however, broke away, whon the officer shot and killed him.
