Show SIAMESE ARE FRIENDLY. Returned Missionary Gives Interesting Interest-ing Talk on the Brown People. Mrs. J. A. Eokin of Bangkok, Slam, gave a most Interesting talk at the First Presbyterian Pres-byterian church yesterday afternoon on the work that is being carried on In that cctntry by tho Presbytorlan Missionary Society of America. In Bangkok, whero thcro aro COO.000 people, only twcivo missionaries mis-sionaries are now In tho flold, and their labors, according to Mrs. Kakln, aro never-ending. Not only aro they always bisy in tho city, but If they go to the country or tho seaside for a rest, tho natives na-tives swarm about thorn like- bees, so nt-linctlvo nt-linctlvo aro whlco peoplo to the Siamese. Not only was the work of missionaries described, both from tho religious and the educational standpoint, but Mrs. Fakln told in a most Interesting way of tho native peopla, their customs, occupations, dress (or undress, rather, for few clothes food, iKttivo huts, tho manners of tho peoplo, peo-plo, and many other points which wcro now and very inteiesting to the women present. Within recent years many of the customs cus-toms of Chrutlan nations are being adopted, as to modo of living, manner of drtss, and within tho past two or threo years modern hospitals have been erected In a number of the districts of Slam, eiccted by order of tne King, with American Ameri-can physicians In charge. Mrs. Eakln :ays that these will bo a great boon to the natives, whoso raco Is rapidly becoming becom-ing extinct because of a lack of knowledge knowl-edge of how to caro for thomselves. She says the; natlvo women know absolutely nothing about the caro of Infants, and lhat tho mortality among the little ones Is frightful. The people, she says, have so long been steeped in Ignorance and sin tlat they are a very unhealthy race. Hamilton King, tho Minister Plenipotentiary Plenipo-tentiary from this country, was highly praised by Mrs. Fakln, who sajs that ho has dono much for the Christian movement move-ment in Slam. Among other things, he has mado it a criminal offense for an American '.o abandon a native wife, and the practice the white- men from other countries make of marrying natlvo women wom-en and then abandoning them at their pleasure is a very common ono. Mrs. Eakln says, though, that as a rule these white men provide for the cast-off wives and tho hoK-casic children, as they are called. The King of Slam, said Mrs. Eakln, Is very frlenlly to the Americans as friendly as a heathen King could bo to a Christian people. It was ho who gave the land on which the Presbyterian high school In Bangkok stands, and ho also gave the land for a hospital erected In that city. j |
