Show II AUTO BUILT I First Car Ready for Trials. English Machines to Speed for James Gordon Bennett Ben-nett Cup. John Hargravos Owns Great Eighty- ' Horse-Power Speed I Motor, j The- first automobile built for the British elimination trials for tho Jamca Gordon Bennett cup raco has just been complotcd. j Tho car. which Is of SO horso-powcr, Is owned by John Ilargraves. a prominent British amateur, and was built by tho Kapler company of England. The two sldo members of tho framo aro perfectly straight, tho necessary clear-nnco clear-nnco for tho steering wheels and tho required re-quired gauge being obtained by curving tho front and roar dumb irons Inward, and carrying the springs outsldo tho frame. Thcro Is no undcrframe, tho motor mo-tor being bolted securely to six lugs, which arc attached to tho main frame, 'A four-cylinder motor Is used, which, it Is stated, develops SO horse-power, the design de-sign of tho engine being on tho usual Kapler method, tho steel liners composing compos-ing tho cylinders being forced Into an aluminum casting, which also forms tho water jackets. One Piece Cylinder Casing1. I In this engino tho aluminum shell covering cov-ering all four cylinders is entirely In one piece Tho valves aro situated on tho right hand side of tho cylinders, the In-! In-! lets being operated by means of rocking , levcra. Tho mlxluro Is supplied to the cnglno by means of a standard Kaphir f carburetter, the control of tho throttle : lping by hand and foot regulators. Tho jj well-known Napier synchronized, high tension Ignition Is fitted with the spark-s spark-s lng plugs carried In tho sides of tho cyl- I Inder heads and between tho valves. Tho commutator Is chain driven, tho chain i, being provided with a jockey pulley to 1 prevent tho ill-effects of wear, or back- lash Tho water circulation Is excecd- ' Ingiy simple and consists of a chaln- driven centrifugal pump and a honoy- ! comb type of radiator, all tho tubes of j which are corrugated insido to give the I largest, amount of cooling Hurface.. A light belt-driven fan behind the radiator u completes tho equipment. I Oiling Well Cared For. Tho lubrication Is maintained normally by a gravity-fed typo of lubricator, but I this is supplemented by means of a semi- 3 rotary hand pump, which can be worked I by the mechanic, a three-way tap allow- fj lng of an extra flush of oil being given ' to the base chamber when required. Tho g usual Napier metal clutch transmits row el er to a sliding form of three-speed and a revcrso gear and propeller shaft to tho llvo axle. All tho brakes are of tho external band type, oho of these acting upon a drum on an extension of the driving shaft, Just at tho rear of the gear-box, and the others upon brake drums of small diameter attached at-tached to tha road wheels. The whole of tha motor and gear Is entirely en-tirely protected from mud and dust from underneath by a metal shield. A Jones fipcedometer, calibrated up to ono hundred miles per hour, registers tho speed at which the car may be traveling. The vehicle ve-hicle has a wheel base of eight feet ten and one-fourth Inches, and a gauge of four feet seven Inches. Eleven car3 havo now entered for the French eliminating trials, th.9 list of tho racers and their drivers being as follows: ICG. V. (Gtranlot). 7. Rlchard-Bralsor 2. Panhnrd (Heath). (Calllolii). 2 Panhard (Teste). 8. Rlcliard-Braslcr I i. Panhanl (Stead), f 01. Fnrmon). D. Bayard I E, Gotoron rniROlly). (A. Clement). G. Rlchard-Brasicr 10. Bayard (Hanrlot). I (Thcry). 11.
