A nio"t animated ani-mated debate ensued, which brought tho Mormon question and the agitation In expressed was that of sympnlhy for the Mormon people, but profound disgust for the polygamous hierarchy and their attitude at-titude toward law and the American Government. Gov-ernment. Some of tho ministers seem to believe that tho Mormon authorities have so tar exposed their real animus and purposo a to make It necessary for tho Federal Government to take cognlr.anco of this lawless body of eccleslasts, nnd find some adequate way of dealing with thorn, notwithstanding .the fact that they aro now protected by Stato lines. Tho protest alleges that the session erred, and Illegally removed the protestnnts from church fellowship, and asks the Presbytery to redres-i tho grievance. Tho report of tho committee on temperance tem-perance provoked a lively discussion, tho uso of tobacco by ministers becoming the center about which tho debate moved. Tho habit was serlouslv deprecated, ono clergyman going so far In his statements as to affirm that he does not believe an excessive user of Iho weed will long maintain hlo moral Integrity, the effect of tobacco tending to confuse moral dis, tlnctlons. As th( ro wcro some gentlemen on tho iloor of tho Presbytery who In-dulgo In-dulgo In smoking, the discussion had a very practical, not to say personal bearing, bear-ing, but It passed off without creating an explosion, yet not without engendering feeling. Tho reports from the fields, as always wero Interesting, disclosing as they dla tho various points of view of workers, and tho Impressions of Mormonlsm on different Individuals, as well as Indicating Indicat-ing that a year of successful work has been done. The general tone of theso reports is hopeful, with hero and there an undercurrent of discouragement showing show-ing that In the face of great odds the Christian forces In Utah are winning The throe words that posslblv would best descrlbo the sentiment of this body of workers a to the future. If ono may judgo from these reports, would bo courage, cour-age, patience, perseverance, and thes oorn of faith In God and love for the people. |
