Show Vt-'oO NOT OELIliVl THE STORY. That was a remarkable discovery, somebody made at Washington of a, book published to edify the President t'nd Congress concerning the purpose of the Utah hierarchy. The Tribune and Its Washington correspondent ae both modest; and both disclaim all credit for finding this nstoundlng thing. Our Washington correspondent merely telegraphed tele-graphed that Homebody else had announced an-nounced the unearthing, and The Trll-une Trll-une merely published the fact as a matter mat-ter of news. But where- did the real dlscoverpr get It? In all of tho works which have been Issued in Utah, and which have been publicly known here as having the Indorsement of any conference con-ference of the church, we can not recall any sentence which saya that "this Republic Re-public can never become an asylum to all nations until tho Republic will protect polygamy as equally sacred as monogamy." And not knowing of any such work, Tho Tribune may bo permitted to express ex-press a doubt as to lis authenticity. The fact Is that the hierarchy holds polygamy not as being "equally as sacred sa-cred as monogamy," but as being the sole dlvl.ic order of marriage. Monogamy Monog-amy Is but for this world; and polygamy polyg-amy Is for eternity as well. The Inducement which has been held out to men and women to Impel their obedlcnco to the revelation on tho celestial ce-lestial order of marriage Is that a husband hus-band and wife living In monogamy in this world will be separated forever In the next world; but that where a man lakes more than one wife and lives according ac-cording to the celestial law, and where the one wife assents to and sustains his practice of polygamy In this life they will be blessed with a union eternal their conjugal relalions will bo unending unend-ing and their children will belong to them, throughout the countless aeons of the future. It Is this exact difference differ-ence tho alleged superior divinity of the plural marriage relation which has led so many people to enter int,o It at the cost of breaking hearts; and It Is the fact that such divinity has been constantly proclaimed which causes Tbo Tribune to doubt the existence of any work, auth$ntlcatcd or supported by the church hierarchy, which places monogamy upon equal terms of sanctity sancti-ty with polygamy as a marriage relation. rela-tion. According to the "gospel on this subject" sub-ject" the monogamist In this world wjll bo the hewer of celestial wood and tha drawer of celestial water fpr the polyg-amist polyg-amist in the world to come. |
