Show SOME DEFINITIONS. The apostle-cdltor of the church gives his parting word to the world before he leaves for Washington. Like most of his messages, wherein It Is Important it. Is not novel, and wherein It Is novel it Is Slot important. But some of his particular words will servo as texts. Ho has a grievance. He talks of a man who claims that the priesthood of "the church Is a "humbug," and after this he Indulges In the usual phrases concerning "a mess of pUage" and "Judas." Humbug. As defined by Webster, this In "something contrived In order to deceive and mislead." Just at the present time the chief humbug that is before the people of Utah for their attention at-tention Is the pretense that the leaders of the Mormon church are guided by the authority of God himself, while the chief of these leaders swears on the witness-stand In Washington that ho has never received any revelation for the church. To auole the words of one who read carefully and weighed logically: "If hef receives revelation, he committed perjury at Washington; If he does not receive revelation, his pretense pre-tense of divine authority Is humbug." Mess of Pottage. This Is supposed to be what Esausold his birthright for. Foolish as may have' been the act of Esau, It Is nothing In folly and faulty to compare with the act of those who are selling the birthright of the people of Utah In order to gratify their own desire for selfish power. The Deseret News and its proprietors are selling the future of this State and all Its people for a mess and such a mess It Is, too! Judas. One of the disciples of the Lord and faster; the purse-bearer. The modern Judas Is the man who pretends pre-tends to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, who Is a purse-bearer, and who Is so anxious to fill the purse that he forgets for-gets the Sanctified Redeemer and the needy children of God, in order to gather to himself the many pieces of silver that he can coax away from his fellow-men. Recalling the great story about the Savior, that He took thongs and lashed the money-changers from the steps of the temple, what a righteous repetition He could perform If He were now to chastise the humbugs, and the messcrs of pottage, and the Judases, and the purse-bearers, who practice their pretenses pre-tenses in His name! |
