Show THE WORK WILL BE SPEEDY, A correspondent, writing from Philadelphia, Phila-delphia, under dalo of Deeember -4. 1904, expresses r-it astonishment thai, if the American party Is waging a battle bat-tle for the fulfillment of pledges to the nation. It dors riot hae the ejitlre support sup-port of the citizenship of this State; and he says that his feeling If? shared by many of those with whom he talks on this subject The American people are Justified In fecllDg surprised that the American party In Utah should meet with any resistance If Its cause of creation and Its battle are merely that the Statehood State-hood pledgee shall he fulfilled And yet that Is our sole origin and purpose The American party came Into existence because the pledges had been violated and because the palpable trend of the Republican and Democratic: Democrat-ic: parties was toward permitting the church hierarchy to so establish its tyrant power here that the only remedy would be a revocation of Leah's1 Statehood The pledges upon which Statehood was granted to Utah have been pre- lously cited In this paper. The violations of these pledges are known to all the world, for testimony In man cases Unwilling and evasive, but In the aggregate snifuVlent to that effect has been given by the chureh leaders on the witness stand at Washington. Wash-ington. hy, then should there be opposition to the American party and Its principled? princi-pled? First, the hierarchy opposes because Its sovereign power is exposed and threatened Second, the followers of the Mormon i hurch are being taught from pulpit and through their press that the American Amer-ican party is waging a war of religious relig-ious persecution against them and they are besought to rally around the leaders for a common defense of a common faith. So far as the hierarchy can blind them, these followers are not permitted to know that violations of Constitution and of pledge are the causes of the opposition and that the violators of Constitution and pledge and their supporters are the only people peo-ple endangered. Third. Gentiles In Utah who have received re-ceived political advantage, or expect to receive political benefits for themselves or friends through alliance with the Church hierarchy, are willing to submit to all that may be Imposed upon them as citizens of this State by the leaders lead-ers of the church, rather than to Jeopardize Jeop-ardize instant hope of political preferment prefer-ment Fourth, there are many conscientious people in this State who admit that the pledges were given, that the pledges have been broken, that the evil Is growing grow-ing to dangerous proportions, that some time a drastic remedy must ba applied If the wrong does not correct itself by natural process of decay; and yet contend that the American party has been established at an untimely hour, or that Its leadership Is unsatisfactory unsatis-factory to them, or that their business Is such that they cannot afford to oppose op-pose the hierarchy, or that their kinship kin-ship Is such that It Is easier to be silent under the wrong thun to wage battle for its redress. If these four reasons are not sufficient suffi-cient to explain the situation here, let us retaliate upon our correspondent by calling attention to the Iniquitous ring that has ruled Philadelphia, asking ask-ing why there should be resistance by any decent citizen there against the work of reform which has been attempted, at-tempted, from time to time, by brael and patriotic men, who could ignore party in behalf of civic right? Selfishness, Selfish-ness, party zeal, personal relations constitute the reasons why the good cause in Philadelphia has not been more generously supported. And thai Is the case In Utah. But, happily, we have certainty of large and early co-operation. Whether the work of reform In Philadelphia shall go on to early success or not the labors of the American party in L'tah are destined to speedy fruition. Pledges given to the nation have been broken here, and men disloyal to the Government are In control. The whole people of the United States are, therefore, there-fore, aggrieved, and when they understand under-stand the great fight they will join with the American party and Insist that Congress shall find a swift way to stop a growing wrong |
