Show A HUMBUG MILITARY FORCE. Dundonald has been telling tho Canadians Cana-dians some plain but unwelcome truths anent their militia and their military unpreparedness, which stirred up the ofllclal ire. He was deposed for it, but that only frees him from restrain in speaking his mind. He tells the Dominion Do-minion plainly that It Is, defenseless, and when it thinks the contrary It is living as a fool's paradise. No doubt all he says 13 true; but what of It? Isn't it nonsense altogether for Canada Can-ada to make any pretense of being a military power, and especially so In the sense of being able to resist an invasion from the United States, should the cause arise for it? And that is precisely what the bumptious bump-tious Canadian Jingoes always have In mind, and always talk about-defeating about-defeating the United States in case o'f war. It Is nonsense altogether. Can ada In fact needs no military preparations prepara-tions for any such reasons; for. first, there is scarcely the remostest possibility possi-bility of any entanglement that would Involve the United States and Great Britain In war, so that war expenditures expendi-tures by Canada arc wholly superfluous; superflu-ous; and Becond. in case there were 6uch an Improbable thing to occur as war between Great Britain and tho United States, no military preparations that Canada could make would amount to anything. She probably does well, therefore, to suprpess her Dundonalds; and should do even better to suppress all expenditures for military purposes, save only such as" serve to make a show on parade days. |
