Show The acquittal of John Rice of tho Charge of murdering Fred Beutler in Ibis city over seven years ago, is no surprise. The testimony was by no means strong against him, and on tho closing 'of the case for the prosecution, the court instructed the jury to acquit. There has always been a good deal of uncertainty about this case, and it has not even been established that the old man was killed, though ho was found dead. For years there was no thought that he had been murdered, and only when the story was told with so much circumstantiality as to make n Judicial Investigation imperative was there any thought of murder in connection with the case. The discharge of the other accused followed as a natural sequence upon the acquittal of Rice, the cases being identical. |
