Show ' THE GOOD WORK GROWING. - A serlcB of meetings ha3 Just been held at Payson to consider the question of supoprting the proposition of asking for Government aid to devolop the waters of the northern portion of the Stale, in pursuance of the plan presented pre-sented by the Stato Engineer and the Arid Land Reclamation Fund Commission. Commis-sion. These meetings were attended by interested citizens of Payson, Spanish Fork, Santaquin, Sallna, Benjamin and the surrounding region, and full explanations ex-planations of tho goncral plan were made, together with the local bearings for that region of the application of the expected benefits. There are certain considerations wOllch in those settlements arc considered consid-ered important in this connection; namely, the obtaining and use of tho water from the Strawberry valley. That reinforcement to the water supply sup-ply has boon relied upon by the people of those places to help out on their shortage 6t water1 for Irrigation which has been suffered during the past few ycavs. This reinforcement has been relied upon because there seemed no other In sight. It was therefore a source of much gratification to the people of that part of Utah county to find that this scheme, which was :helr hope, was included In the Commission's general plon. This satisfaction was Increased on the report re-port of Mr. Tanner of the Government service that the supply to be derived from the Duchesne is so large as to bo important, and was to be added to the Strawberry flow. As to the filings that had been made prior to the prospective taking up of this scheme by the Federal Government, Govern-ment, their relation will have to be somewhat changed; Instead of being made ns an original appropriation of water, they will be applications for additional ad-ditional supply, such ns the canal companies com-panies are filing hero additional to their reservations for primary rights. But no primary rights are possible In this Strawberry Valley scheme, in the ordinary sensfe; and so they will come in as stated, and the lands ofthc applicants appli-cants will be pledged, as here, for the repayment to the Government of the expenditures for securing the addition-" al supply. But no doubt all the bearings of the proposition aro fully understood bj' the farmers in intorcst. That they unanimously unani-mously and enthusiastically Indorsed the proposition speaks well for their discernment and enterprise. It Is a fact, also, that every time a series of such meetings as those held at Payson endorses tho Irrigation plan, the final and desired consummation ic brought so much the nearer. |
