Tells of the Growth of His Adopted State and Its Fine Financial Showing. i J. K Hardy, private, secretary to Gov. Morrison of Idaho, who was in town yesterday, is enthusiastic over the growth nnd poeslbllltles of his adopted State. Mr. Hardy is an old Salt Laker, having been a deputy United States marshal here some yeJirsogo, and was. renewing accjualntanccy. "Boise Is having a steady growth," j said Mr. na,rdy. "A new hotel Is Building Build-ing on the eltc'of th& old Overland. It occupies an area of 100x125 feet and will be six stories ln height. The- big Methodist Meth-odist church has Just been completed and the Government Is planning to enlarge en-large the barracks. An architect has been detailed to draw planw. The population pop-ulation of Bols?e Is now between 11,000 and 13,000. The growth extends to all parts of the State. Irrigation projects are drawing settlers to Idaho by Uie hundreds who are racking homes. State Finances in Good Shape. "Tho State's Unances are ln excellent shape. Idaho has a large sum of money from the s?ale of Its timber lands. At the tirnw the present Administration went into office this sum amounted to $160,000. Previously this money had been held In the sinking funds, but upon the recoromondation of Gov. Morrison Mor-rison and the legal opinion of the Attorney-General, JJIL'5,000 of this money has been invested In district echool bonds and In foreign loans averaging an Interest of C per cent annually. This Interest la apportioned among the svchool districts. The leasing of public lands, inaugurated by Gov. Morrison, Is I bringing in $00,000 a year, which in ap- plied to the school fund, thus making the tax for educational purposes very light. Improvements m Idaho. "The- Idaho State Industrial Reform school near St, Anthony, Fremont county, Is nearly completed. There is still a llttjo talk about the formation of a new State out of northern Idaho and eastern Washington, but I hardly think the project will ever be carried out." Mr. Hardy declared that the reports from the Thunder Mountain district have not been exaggerated. A State wagon road is being constructed to this mining region and will be completed within a month. Held Up for a Tribune. An amusing story is told by Mr. Hardy of an adventure which he had while traveling by stage between Frisco and Burbank ln January, 1&08. "It was dark and bitterly cold," said lie, "when all of a eudden two men stepped out, one on either side of the train. The driver f?ald to me, 'We are In for It now, and almost at the same moment one of the men shouted, 'Hold up your hands.' The driver and 1 immediately im-mediately compiled. All sorts of stories of hold-ups ran through my mind, when one of the men said 'Give me a Salt Lake Tribune. I haven't seen any news for a month." He got The Tribune, and that was all there was to the hold-up." |
