Show P0ST0FFICE FIRE DRILL. Lively Work Done by Clerks in Chicago Chi-cago Office, and Stamp Buyers Get a Wetting. Chicogo. Jan. 20. Following an alarm of fire In the temporary main pbstofllce on the lake front, nearly 100 tons of mail matter and twenty-two stamp cancelling machines, weighing half a ton each, were carried out of the building In four minutes. Then the army of clerks learned the alarm was a false one, sent In to test the eflicacy of the fire drill. Two hundred persons were buying stamps or posting letters when Custodian Nagl sent in the Are alarm. In less than three tnlnutcti after the rounding of the gong seven lines of hose had been attached and streams of water were being directed along the floo' much to the discomfiture of the spectators. |
