Show RAISERS OF FRUIT GET TOGETHER Prof. Hutt of tho Agricultural Col-lego Col-lego Delivers an Interesting- Lecture Lec-ture to a Good Crowd. Prof. Hutt of the Agricultural college appeared before the Salt Lake County Horticultural society at Its semi-monthly meeting yesterday and spoke at length on matters of great interest to I the members of the association. There ! wore about thirty-five of the leading fruit growers of the county present, and the meeting was in every respect one of the most successful ever held. TUe speaker dwelt 'upon the necessity of pruning in the care of orchard trees. All trees, he said, should) be kept well pruned in order lo yield a heavy fruitage. fruit-age. He mid It was quite essential that the surface of orchard ground be kept well cultivated in order that the sub-soil retain plenty of moisture, which otherwise would run off or bo lost by evaporation. He spoke about blight, and laid stress upon the necessity of budding- from bearing trees. A pedigree pedi-gree of a tree, he said, did not amount to much If Its bearing properties had not been fully demonstrated. Prof. Hutt was heartily In favor of a motion passed to ask the State to establish an auxiliary experiment station sta-tion at Salt Lake City. The weather is considered much more salubrious here than at Logan, and It is the belief that much better results could be obtained here. A resolution of respect was offered' for -the late vice-president of the society, C E- Allen, who died about two weeks E ago, and the meeting adjourned until F Saturday, March 12lh. r |
