J9.-The following letter let-ter relative to the lcmoval of growing timber on the Mantl forest rcservo has been issued by Forest Supervisor A. W. Jensen: '0 tlie Mayor and city Council and Private Individuals: You are advised that tho question of removal of young plno trees from the Mantl forest "reserve for planting purposes has been submitted to the Commissioner of the General Land onico at Washington, and the following reply received: " 'Corporations arc not entitled to the . V." V , ?L Iore- reserve tinber. nor are Individuals allowed free use of forest reserve re-serve timber for any purposes other than those mentioned in tho provisions of law regarding freo use.' "The provisions of the law relative to said matter ure as follows' 'The Secretary Secre-tary of the interior may permit, under regulations lo be prescribed by him, the I use of timber and stono upon such rcs-I rcs-I ervations, free of charge, bv bona fld settlors, miners, residents, etc., for lire-wood, lire-wood, fencing, building, mining, prospecting prospect-ing and other domestic purposes, as may be needed by such persons for such purposes pur-poses to bo used In tho State whero such reserve?- are located. ' "For the purpose of preserving the living liv-ing and growing timber and promoting the younger growth on forest reservations the Secretary of the Interior under Buch rules and regulations as ho mav prescribe, pre-scribe, may causo to be designated and appraised so much of the dead, mature or largcg rowth of trees found upon such torost reservations as may bo compatible with tlie utilization of the forests thereon, and may soli tho same. " 'You are advised, however, that applications appli-cations for taking young evergreen Bap-lings Bap-lings for planting should bo submitted to tho department, with report of tho Forest For-est Supervisor.'
