Show tij i igt r S C W f Correspondence Tribune Washington Jan 23There Is an unusual air of expectancy at the German Ger-man embassy Just now Even a month In dance of iho comiiifc of royalty preparations are well under way for Its reception and Prince Henry will find a magnificent welcome when he first sets foot upon American soil The exuberance of genial Herr von ITolleben can well be Imagined when he receives the brother of his sovereign sover-eign at the German embassy where the Prince will be entertained during his stay In this country This embassy em-bassy Is a substantial edifice In the fashionable section of the capital and its host is one of the most accomplished accom-plished diplomatic in Washington He is a bach lot of about 40 years and is among the most eligible men In society so-ciety being much In demand among smart matrons who have daughters not bespoken Dinners at the German embassy are always enjoyable affairs when Jlerr von UolI lhen entertains his guests with vocal as well as instrumental in-strumental music The same Interesting bustle pervades the ofllces of high olllcials In the State department where consultations are being held In regard to a suitable welcome wel-come for Prince Henry While the brother of the German Kaiser Is not heir to a throne as was Prlnco Albert of Belgium who vlrlted America two years ago yet the mission upon which he comes to us represent the Kaiser In an entirely personal kense maltes his visit unprecedented l and of equal significance sig-nificance with that of the Prince of Vales nearly fifty years ago Probably no girl ot her years In America has ever found herself In such a prominent position and received so many conspicuous attentions as Miss Alice Roosevelt the young daughter of the President Coming to the While House fresh from school and with but budding ideas of the world of convention conven-tion this young woman has been received re-ceived Into society under the most auspicious aus-picious circumstances which could possibly pos-sibly allen a debut since which event she has bccn feted and dined and loasled day and night In the rush of the short season With It all her girlish charm of manner and evident sincerity have not been spoiled and the latest honor lobe lo-be laid at her feet Is the request from Kaiser William of Germany to christen chris-ten his yacht which will place her more prominently thar ever In the public ye of the entire American people peo-ple as well na of the German nation A large ball will be given at the German Ger-man embassy on the 27th of February the birthday of Emperor William In honor of Prince Henry which will be the greatest occasion In jears Unfortunately Unfor-tunately tho President may not attend owing to the established precedent that a President may not attend functions func-tions save those given by his Cabinet It remains to be seen whether the British Embassador will grace the feast with his presence na there Is apparently ap-parently a growing feeling of hostility between the English and Germans S I S The Congressional reception on the 23rd was the last but one of the official offi-cial functions at the White House which owing to the short season have been crowded Into the month of January Janu-ary The army and navy Deception on the 30th will wind up a series of more llrilliant nfertalnmcnts than have occurred oc-curred for jnanj > ycnrs past The entire Congressional body was represented on Thursday both houses turning out In full force to greet President Pres-ident Roosevelt This was the first occasion oc-casion of the seasonwhen this contingent con-tingent were Invited collectively although al-though they have been sprinkled pro fusely among other functions which I have taken place previously No more Interesting function to the true American Is to be attended than this where representatives from every State In the Union may be met and studied upon neutral groundS ground-S S S Senator Scott of West Virginia hayIng hay-ing been a contemporary on the national na-tional committee of the last campaign with Col William C Payne of Wisconsin Wiscon-sin the Senator and Mrs Scott were I among the first to give a dinner In honor of the new PostmasterGeneral and Mrs Payne Mrs Payne gave her first reception on Wednesday the 22nd In the parlors of the Arlington hotel that exclusive old hostelry of Washington staid and conservative but always patronized by the most fastidious Mrs Payne was assisted by her niece Miss Jones Mrs Perry Heath wife of the former Assistant As-sistant PostmasterGeneral and Mrs Johnson wife of the present Assistant PostmasterGeneral S The receptions w hlch Mrs Roosevelt gives to 200 invited guests every Friday afternoon remind one of the Monday afternoon affairs of Mrs Cleveland which were always occasions of unusual unusu-al enjoyment and cordiality Mrs Roosevelt serves light 1 refreshments only In the shape of tea with bread and butter which custom those hostesses host-esses might follow who complain that they cannot be hospitable on public days owing to the expense of refreshments refresh-ments 4 IV O The latest addition to the group of Senatorial hostesses Is Mrs Chauncoy M j Depew who Is an exceedingly handsome hand-some woman of about 35 to 10 years Mrs Depew is tall with splendid physique brown hair Just turning gray and the complexion ot a girl of 16 Her eyes are large round and blue and meet the gaze squarely and frankly While as Miss May Palmer of New York Mrs Depew lived almost always abroad her manners are thoroughly American Site has a hearty handclasp hand-clasp and the faculty of appealing to the personality of each one addressed Mrs Depew is the Ideal iife for a public pub-lic tnan Her favorite color Is evidently evident-ly light blue since she affects that shade a great deal and the gown she wore at the Judicial dinner her first appearance at the White House being a wonderfully pretty creation of white taffeta embroidered all over with blue medallions with touches of blue chiffon at waist and corsage Her necklace of diamonds was a superb ornament Mis Depew Is a Catholic and will worship at St Matthews the church where all the diplomatic corps In Washington Wash-ington attend with toe exception of the British and German Embassadors and their suites Miss Pauldlng the nlecQ of Senator Depew and formerly mistress of his house assisted at the reception given by Mrs Dcpcw on Thursday It has always al-ways been the custom at the Dopew home to open the dlnlngroorn on occasions occa-sions when the ladles receive and to serve a somewhat elaborate collation 4 u Almost every location wqs represented represent-ed by an athome day during the past week Lady Paunccfote and her
