Show I PEOPLE DIE IN WRECK Three Persons Killed Fifty Others Injured EIGHTEEN SERIOUSLY HURT Dead Mans Curve on Missouri Pacific the Place Past Hall Westbound Crashes Into an Excursion Train and Death and Injury to Many Follows Kansas City Mo July 12 Missouri Pacific fast mall No7 which left SL Louis at 3 oclock this morning for Kansas City crashed Into an excursion train No6 southbound from Kansan City that had become stalled at Dead Mans Curve between Little Knoch and Lee Summit at 1025 this morning THREE KILLED OUTRIGHT Three persons were killed outright two of them tramps and fifty others were Injured With the exception of one or two of the crew on the fast II mall all the Injured were on the excursion ex-cursion train Most of them were Kansas City negroes Eighteen were seriously hurt The injuries of the others consisted of cuts and bruises None of the passengers on the fast mal was hurt WENT DOWN EMBANKMENT The engine the mall and the baggage cars on the fast mall went down an embankment but the rest of that train remained upright as did the excursion train DEAD ride Roy Swain Kansas City stealing a WInklcman 3912 Russell avenue St Louis Unknown man SERIOUSLY HURT Walter G Coleman baggageman Kansas City badly bruised and cut Eugene Johnson Qulncy Il bruised and face cut Hale Davey St Joseph Mo head cut and back sprained Charles Reynolds Scdalia Mo badly bad-ly bruised Stella and Sale Rice Independence Mo sisters heads cut and bruised Arthur Smith Kansas City arm and head cut Harry Leldy boy Kansas City leer broken and bruised about head and body rater Brown boy Kansas City leg broken and head cut Charles Walburn Kansas City probably prob-ably Internally George Hlckok Kansas City thigh fractured and Internal Injuries Charley Pratt Kansas City internal probably fatal Thomas Cooper Kansas City shoulder shoul-der fractured and body badly bruised Benjamin Robinson Kansas City Ken hips wrenched and possible internal In-ternal Injuries John N Whitney Kansas City badly cut and bruised James Llghtes Kansas City leg crushed and head hurt Florence Robinson Kansas City Kan noso broken and other Injuries A H WInslow Kansas City artery In leg severed M A Jackson Kansas City travnllngr salesman severe contusion on head Mrs I N WellB hIps hurt RESPONSIBILITY FOR WRECK Responsibility for the wreck seems to rest with the crew oC the fast mal who failed to stop promptly when flagged The engine on the excursion train which consisted of twelve coaches heavily loaded broke down A flagman was sent ahead to stop tho fast mail then about due Tho engineer engi-neer of the fast mail failed to nee the foremost flagman and only slacked up when warned by the second man who was within 3 short distance of the excursion ex-cursion train The fast mat was running run-ning at a high rate of speed andit was unable to come to a full stop CRUSHED INTO EXCURSION When the fast mall struck it was making fifteen miles nn hours The engine the baggage car and tho foremost fore-most mall car left the track and rolled dowu the embankment The compact damaged the engine and baggage car of the excursion train but the cars remained re-mained upright SHRIEkING GROANINNG MASS Most of the injured were in the baggage bag-gage car on the excursion train This car had been turned Into 3 refreshment refresh-ment car and in that were about fifty persona moet negroes making merry The crash came without warn ing and they were tumbled Into 0 shrieking groaning mass crushed and otherwise maimed The injured were cared for quickly and every attention was given When the track was cleared the dead were taken to Leo Summit and the Injured brought to tho Missouri Pacific hospital at Kansas City There It la stated tonight that all are expected to recover |
