Show THE PRESIDENTS ADVICE I Hasty judgments are seldom permanent perma-nent Judgments It is therefore not well lo speak without due consideration oh important I mailers lYe commend these truisms to those who have felt moved to criticise President Roosevelts counsel as to the inadvisability of choosing an Apostle of the Mormon church to be U S Senator from Utah Whether ono thinks that the President should give advice or not on the subject Is I not material ma-terial in view of the fact that he has given It and that lie huts done HO In the most friendly candid and kindly iplrlu There Is In fact nothing to resent re-sent In this AVhal ho has said is I unquestionably un-questionably his l > honest conviction and It is certain thnt In saying it he has been guided by h what he considers time beat Interests of the State What then shall be the reply It Is inconceivable that this reply l should be defiant or resentful Whatever Is done the counsel > should be fairly considered con-sidered and the decision should be calmly taken and for reasons that will bear the scrutiny of reason and of time It Is t not sufilcient to say that the counsel coun-sel can be Ignored and the Legislature can do as it pleases for nil are aware of that and that is I not the question at all lhe real point IH what Is it best I to do A man can be elected who will i go to Washington and be cordially received re-ceived everywhere his recommendations deferred to his wishes consulted his de tires considered favorably in such a case the man being Senator would be of high service and usefulness to the State On the other hand a man could be sent to Washington Jis Senator who would be received coldly his tecoin mendations viewed with suspicion or distrust his desires not considered of weigh his presence received haltingly can any one doubt that the services of such a one would be at the minimum for the Interests of the State The President Pres-ident has done the people of Utah a kindly service by pointing out the difficulties dif-ficulties of the situation in case an Apostle were elected The people should receive that service In the spirit in which It is tendered and give it the cool consideration that Its courtesy and Importance require |
