Show MURDER S THE CHARGE J H Wade Held for Shooting Shoot-ing a Chinaman 4 IS IN JAIL WITHOUT BAIL The Charge Is Vlurdar in the First Degree Preliminary Examination Before Justice Jus-tice Burroughs Shows Wade Up in a Bad Light r 1 The preliminary hearing of J II Wade the miner charged with shoot inga Chinese cook at the AltaQulncy mine on December 19th was concluded l before Justice Burroughs of Sandy precinct pre-cinct at noon yesterday and the prisoner pris-oner was bound over to the District court without bail on the charge of murder In the first degree The biggest i r part of two days was consumed In the examination although only three witnesses wit-nesses were examined by the State and four by the defense The defendant attempted at-tempted to prove that the Chinaman had q made a murderous assault upon him with the big clghteenlnch butcher knife which he had In his hand at the time of his death I SHOT FOR FUN The prosecution proved at least sufll clently to warrant binding the man over to the District court that Wade had practically shot Die Chinaman down in cold blood without Justlllable provocation provoca-tion None of the details of the shooting shoot-ing had come to light previous to the preliminary examination but l > from the evidence adduced yesterday it would stein that Vade had shot the cook merely for the fun of the Thing The facts In the case appear to be that a young man by the name of Olsen had asked for a glass of water and had found fault with the cook for not filling the glass brimming full They had a few words at the time and evidently some more later when the Chinaman procured the big butcherknife as a weapon fearing bodily harm Wade heard of the affair it seems and went to his bunk end deliberately took his revolver re-volver from his satchel loaded the weapon and then began l > to look for his victim t STORY OF THE MURDER The Chinaman was standing by the kitchen door of the boardinghouse holding a shovel and the knife In his hand He was merely standing still and did not see Wade at all when the latter leveled his gun on the Orientals eye and pulled the trigger The prisoners refusal re-fusal to say anything about the circumstances circum-stances surrounding the killing nt the time or since his arrest indicate strongly that he has been In trouble before and that he had no straight story manufactured manufac-tured to Justify him In taking the Chl namans life QUICK OX THE TRIGGER The gun was a fine weapon and f Wade Is said to be proud of his ability to use the trigger < He is considered an expert shot and able to take off a chipmunks chip-munks head at anywhere Cram ten to fifty paces > distant In support of the fact that he Is easily angered and retorts re-torts to the use of his weapon a little Incident that happened at Alta sometime some-time prior to the killing same out at the examination While playing catch with a boy Wide complained that the latter threw the ball too hard and became exceedingly ex-ceedingly angry An older brother of 1 the lad attempted to remonstrate with him for giving vay to his passions and Wade It Is said Immediately procured his gun The story Is that he leveled the weapon on the brother and no doubt would have shot him had the other shown any wcakncKS The brother however told him that his actions were t cowardly and telling him to shoot completely com-pletely cowed him |
