Show It PLEA OF GUILTY lti f I MADE BY MURDERER ROSE Is Now Safe in the County Jail Rotary HIS NERVE IS NOT SHAKEN I Hild Without Bail fir Murder In First Dagroe Identified the Body of His Wife and Places No Obstruction in the Way of the Law 4 i Frank Rose is evidently determined t to save the State all possible trouble in convicting him of the murder oft of-t his wife Yesterday afternoon he entered en-tered l a plea of guilty to murder In the first degree and Immediately afterward af-terward looked on the body and iden tified1 It as that of Maud Morris Rose the woman he killed He was then removed re-moved to the county jail and placed In the rotary CROWD WAS WAITING It was generally supposed that Rose would be arraigned before Judge Diehl yesterday afternoon and a large crowd assembled In the courtroom at 2 oclock in anticipation of the event All the spectators seats were filled and standing room was at a premium Men and boys predominated but there were at least a halfdozen women some carrying car-rying babies in the throng ROSE STILL COOL The usual run of drunk and vagrancy cases wan gone through with and the court declared a recess but the crowd still lingered At 255 Rose was brought in from the Jail through the private passageway He wa followed Into the courtroom by Chief Lynch Capt Bur bidge Jailer Kimball and Officer Sperry HIs familiar overalls and checked jumper were concealed from view41 by a long blue mackintosh and hjs bead was coveredby a white som liraro On entering the railing he took off h8hatarid heltl it in his right hand Sitting down on a bench with I his back to the crowd he waited calmly to see what was going to happen POSED AS A STATUE The cleric of the court David Bern helsel called the case of Frank foreJudge fore-Judge Diehl told Rose to stand up and the prisoner obeyed taking one or two steps toward the Judges bench He placed his left hand on his hip and held his hat at his side with his right This attitude he maintained without a movement or a tremor throughout the proceedings his eyes fixed on the clerIc I READY TO PLEAD Mr Bernhelsel rend the complaint charging Hose with murder in the first degree It was quite a lengthy document docu-ment and took several minutes in the reading When It was finished even to the signature oC Capt Burbidge Deputy Dep-uty County Attorney Dana Smith requested re-quested the court to inform the prisoner pris-oner as to his legal rights Before asking you to plead cau 4 Honed the court I will inform you that you have a right to tako twenty four hours In which to enter your plea and also a right to secure coutoa Are I you ready to plead now Yes sir said Rose firmly Are you guilty or not guilty Guilty The word was pronounced without a Quiver of the voice At the request of the County Attorney Attor-ney Judge Diehl announced that the hearing would go over without date and the defendant would be committed ti the custody of the Sheriff of Salt Lake c untr without ball Rose had beeh standing like a statue all the time Js that all he Inquired respectfully I respect-fully when the court concluded m THAT WAS ALL Ye thats all said the Judge and he stepped back toward his seat Instantly In-stantly the officers surrounded him amiescorted him out of the room holdIng p hold-Ing the crowd in until Rose was safe in jail The spectators did nothing but gaze at Rose in openmouthed curiosIty curios-Ity and there was no demonstration whatever When It was all over everybody every-body commented on Roses remarkable coolness and fortitude I Rose will waive examination and if the County Attorney consents will be bound over to the District court without with-out the taking of testimony SAW HIS VICTIMS BODY r Immediately after his arraignment he was placed In the patrol wagon and tnkon by way of South Temple street to Joseph William Taylory undertaking ejrtabllshment The wagon drove In the back way and Rose was led into t the morgue where lay the body of his wife The cloth was taken from th 5 face and Rose looked at It indlf 4 fcrrntly lo thdt the body of your wife Maud Roc Capt Burbidge asked Yes sir replied Rose Is that the woman you killed 7 The sir The officer called attention to the rscars on the hands supposed to have been made during a struggle for then the-n nnd asked Rose If he knew how they I had been caused Rose replied that he did not Ii LI TAKEN TO THE JAIL The party then drove back to the city hall and thence down State streel west on Third South and north on First Went to the county jail Rose wa j not recognized and the wagon attracted at-tracted but little attention The prisOner pris-Oner made no remarks during the trip A and Bhowud no signs of nervousness r I I t Those In the wagon with him were Chief Lynch Capt Burbidge and Sergt Roberts At the jail Rose was taken at dace to a cell In the rotary |
