Show I DEMOCRATS 03 MICHIGANj I i I j I Platform Adopted by Them In State I Convention Port Huron Mich May lThc first I Stale political convention in Michigan 1 was held here today when the Demo l cratlo representatives from the counties coun-ties elected delegates to the natIonal I i convention and adopted resolutions regarding I re-garding their views on the political Issues Is-sues of the time The following arc the delegates large Daniel Cam pau Detroit Thomas E Earkworlh Jackson Wellington R Burt Sagl flaw Rush Culver Marquette i p The platform as adopted without debate l de-bate contains the following The Democracy of Michigan greets the friends of good government and 1 I reaffirms and pledges Itself to a ro j newal of the struggling for equal rights I I and equal privileges ns exposed In the I Chicago platform and so ably championed I cham-pioned by our gallant leader In that I great struggle for commercial Industrial Indus-trial and financial freedom We sincerely deplore and condemn the action of tho Republican majority In behalf of the two houses of Congress I I I andof President McKinley in refusing I to be bound by the Constitution in tIll government of Porto Rico and the I other islands recently acquired from Spain andin putting the United Stales in the attitude of having the most despotic des-potic and tyiannlcal colonial policy of any modern nation We denounce the whole Republican scheme of the whole Presidential dependencies I de-pendencies aa not only unconstltu 1 tlonal but as extremely Impolitic unwise un-wise and unworthy of libertyloving I i AmeHcans i We believe this policy 1 has been dictated dic-tated to and forced upon the Administration Adminis-tration of President McKinley by the I mercenary combinations known as trusts The tru t Is supreme In political polit-ical as In Industrial activities In both It Is an unmixed public evil The economic advantage of Industrial combinations com-binations are entirely lost to the people peo-ple and swelled by the profits of arrogant arro-gant and conscienceless magnates who feed on the reprehensible indifferences of their victims We refer our delegates dele-gates to the national convention to urge upon that body the selection of the most practical and effective of the many plans for curtailing the powers I of the trusts and to pledge the party to specific legislation upon the lines adopted We still Indorse the movement for the historic union of sold and silver asa as-a primary money metal and In general those principles of governmental reform re-form enunciated so clearly in the last national convention of the pall We arc opposed to the retirement of greenback currency and to the national I na-tional bank having a monopoly of tho paper money of the country We are naturally opposed to militarism I mili-tarism and conditions requiring a large standing army We are In favor of home rule for our cities Equal and Just taxation and municipal ownership of public utilities util-ities We favor the Initiative and referendum referen-dum as the best means yet offered for preventing the enactment of obnoxipus and Injurious legislation We extend our sympathy to the citizens citi-zens of the South African republics In the gallant light they are making for life liberty and home We are In favor ot a Federal Income tax and the election of United Slates Senators by the people Ve Instruct the delegates from this State to cast the vote of the State for the Hon W J Bryan for President Wo heartily approve of the nomina lion of the lion Charles A Towne to the VicePresidency and greet him asa as-a native of this Slate whose love of right and Justice are superior to par tisanship and whose splendid ability fearless courage and statesmanship I eminently fit him to be placed by the side of our great leader as a Joint stan dardbearer the coming campaign |
