excellent health Our trip abroad said Senator Kearns was thoroughly enjoyed by all of us I left Mrs Kearns uim t family at Lausanne where they are comfortably established wlth a gov erncsa for the children We traveled with Perry Heath acrofcs the water through Italy France England etc visiting the principal cities in all the European countries with the exception of Germany which I intend to visit another time I tell you continued the Senator there Is nothing which his makes an American appreciate Those European country like a trip abroad ropean people are simply not in it at I all with us cither In a business way or in the enjoyment of liberty and op portunitv We have them outclassed on every hand and I return here more than ever convinced that we live in the only country on earth WILL BE INDUSTRIOUS III have come back to go to work said the Senator with1 a smile and If I can make enough money to afford It I shall go back across the Water again this fall to bring the family home It may be though that I1 cannot can-not find the time to go over Mrs Kearns and the family will not return re-turn to Salt Lake in all probability until the new house te finished which will probably be about the 1st of November No-vember S Yes continued Senator Kearns I was In New York during the great stock excitement I arrived Wednesday Wednes-day and the big day was Thursday I but I did not visit Wall street and IS j I was not Interested la any way In the S doings on the street It was hot I literally not only on Wall street but on every other street in Now York while I was there I 1 found the weather weath-er there very oppressive and although it Is warm here for the season it is nothing compared with what It is In the East SHY ABOUT APPOINTMENTS S Senator Kearns would not discuss the matter of Federal appointments In Utah That business is not icady for consideration yet he said It Is over a year until the terms of office of the present Incumbents expire and I think it would be illadvised at this time to talk about the matter No I am not prepared to say whether I believe be-lieve there will be changes or not As I say It is all too far ahead to be considered con-sidered at this time Senator Kearns expressed gratification gratifica-tion at the appointment of Maj Grant to a position in the regular army and spoke of the hard fight to get the necessary ne-cessary legislation permitting the appointment ap-pointment through The Senator also expressed satisfaction at the appointment appoint-ment of Lieut Gordon N Klmball He is the son of a soldier and has shown himself good soldier as well so I think his appointment will be generally general-ly acceptable to every one In the State he said THE CASE OF WOLTERS In regard to the case of Wolters the man accused of attempting to extort money from him and Mrs Kcarns through threatening letters Senator Kearns said the latest advices he had were to the effect that the demurrer had not been argued yet What aroused me most In this case he said was the sending of the letter to Mrs Kearns threatening to abduct the chil dren Now If the fellow had confined his threats to me I would not have minded so much because I am pretty well able and pretty well accustomed to take care of myself but the thought that any one would write to my wife threatening harm to the poor little children Who have never harmed any one impels me to push the matter to the finish There are always plenty of cranks to start after people when they jtit up in the world was suggested to the Senator S Yes he replied antI my experience experi-ence has been that they are all after the dough That seems to be a common com-mon falling TRIBUTE TO JOE Senator Kearns laughed when he was asked If he had had any trouble with Joseph Llppman Why dont you fellows let up on Joe he asked Canta good fellow and a good rt Mil iilce Jo ° take a vactloh after nthllnfe through a hard campaign without everybody chasing him all over of the distressing situa tion which npw exists I have concluded not to bother the President or those connected with him Senator Kearns expressed deep regret at Mrs Mc Klnloys Illness remarking that the President thought more of his wife than of all the honor and distinction which has como to him |
