| Show thwsE FOR RAPTKR S I o Pastor Shanks of East Side Church Leaves SAYS HE WILL NOT RETURN Mr Shanks Had Been Granted a Vacation Va-cation but Last Evening Just Before Be-fore Going Away Ho Said Ho Was Going East to Stay and Would Engage En-gage In Revival Work Members of Church Board Not Aware of Resignation Re-signation Which He Said He Had Tendered Rev E H Shanks who has been pastor of the Eaat Side Baptist church the past year has severed his connection connec-tion with that congregation and left Salt Lake last night to Join his family in Chicago where he will hereafter reside re-side 3Ir Shanksfl sudden departure will be learned with much surprise as It had been announced that he had been given a months vacation which he I would spend in California Mr Shank has been an active worker while here rnd has apparently given entire satisfaction satis-faction both to his people and the public pub-lic and his leaving without having I made a public formal announcement of his Intention or having given members of his congregation notice that they might bid him goodbye or tender nn expression of their regard for him and appreciation of his services is altogether alto-gether unusual Mr SHANKSS EXPLANATION When Mr Shanks last evening Informed In-formed a Tribune man or his Intended departure he was asked for the cause of his sudden move and If the delations between himself and his congregation had been eta strained nature and Mr Shanks said The Intention Heave Salt Lake on my part is not sudden I have had the matter uricler advisement advise-ment for some months I informed the advisory board about a month ago that I would not remain and yesterday I tendered It mv resignation which was accepted I have been debating In my mind for some time whether to go to California or to Chicago where both my people and Mrs Shankss people live and yesterday I received word that settled the matter lirfavor oC Chicago I shall go to Ogden tonight and from there Denver where I have an engagement en-gagement ylth a district convention of j the Christian Endeavor society next week I expect to engage In revival work with Chicago as my headquarters headquar-ters beginning probably in Iowa or Missouri My relations with the church here have been the most pleasant and entirely satisfactory so far as I know but the organization is small and they cannot afford to raise my present salary sal-ary of 1000 a year and I owe it to my family to earn more BOARD MEMBERS STATEMENTS That Mr Shankss departure was not made known to his people and that at least some members of the advisory board were not notified of the resignation resigna-tion Is apparent from statements made by members of the church J J Corum president of the board of the East Side Baptist church when approached by a reporter of The Tribune Trib-une said it was not true that Rev Mr Shanks had tendered his resignation as pastor of the church that on Wednesday Wednes-day last he was granted a leave of absence ab-sence or vacation by the church as a body Mr Comm added however a remark which at least carried the Impression Im-pression that ho would not be surprised sur-prised to receive the resignation at anytime any-time It was Mr Shanks has gone East presumably on a vacation The resignation may como later That Is all I care to say this evening Another member of the board however how-ever Charles F Borden was most emphatic em-phatic In denying that Rev Mr Shanks had gone East to remain and said There Is no truth In the report The relations between pastor and people peo-ple were of the pleasantest and he would have no cause for leaving on that account A lady member of the First Baptist church rode down In the car with Mr Shanks last evening as he was on his way to the train He bade her goodbye good-bye saying he was going East for a little vacation and asked her to deliver de-liver a message to a friend for him One of the leading workers among the ladies In Mr Shankss congregation congrega-tion was also questioned about the matter She was in total Ignorance about the Eastern trip however and would not credit the story that he had left Salt Lake without notifying his congregation She too said the people of the church were very fond of their pastor and there certainly was no unpleasantness existing between the pistor and his flock |
