Show DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS I Rowlands of Nevada was Present by Invitation Washington Jan IA w < wellattended caucus of the Democratic members of the House of Representatives was held tonight Mr Newlands of Nevada of the Silver party was present by Invitation Invi-tation of Mr Ilklmrrtson the Democratic Demo-cratic floor leaden for the purpose of presenting a plan for united action by all elements opposed to the Republican organization The actual business transacted by the caucus was confined to the adoption adop-tion of a resolution for the appointment appoint-ment of the committee of one member from each State to look after the Con nres 8lonal elections and the selection of McHsra Underwood of Alabama and Eppos of Virginia as whips for the arrangement of pairs Mr Newlands spoke at considerable length ronrornliiff the unification of 1 the elMinnts oppotrd to tin political 1 I party now In power In particular he suggested an advisory committee of one member from each State the choice to be made from Democrats Populists Silver Republicans Silver Independents Independ-ents and In fact all the elements op posing the Republican party The purpose pur-pose of this committee It was explained ex-plained will be to formulate a policy on the more Important public questions ques-tions and thus secure the advantage of united action Mr Ncwlands also went to some ex tent Into the important yestions now before the public with a view of show Ing that the preferences should be harmonized so as to avoid opposition He stated his suggestion was merely tentative and that after a full consideration consid-eration of the subject action could betaken be-taken at some future time The chief Interest of the evening centered In a resolution offered by Representative Rep-resentative Robertson of Louisiana with a view of securing a steering committee which would have the power to formulate the Democratic policy on Important questions of legis lation The resolution met with considerable con-siderable favor but some of the In fluential members urged Mr Robertson not to press the matter for the present and he consented to withdraw It until later unll1j |
