Show REPAIRING THE DAMAGED WALL I 471 I 7 Ic 1 I r I Lr I I I k = 1 4 11 q l44I7p ili 4fr I I I1wAp94 d21 7 The Northwest Corner of the Salt Lake Theater Showing Portion Destroyed I De-stroyed by Falling Wall I The work of repairing the damaged wall of the leanto of the Salt Lake Theater will be begun today Manager Pyper of the Theater called the directors di-rectors together yesterday morning to discuss the accident and prepare for repairing > the damage There were present at the meeting President II J Grant VicePresident C S Burton and Director John Henry Smith They took a look at the wall and after consulting consult-ing about the matter instructed Mr Pyper to proceed to repair It O D JRomney and George Curley under whose direction the repairs wmbc made took charge yesterday and proceeded pro-ceeded to brace the wall so that it was quite safe for the workmen and people who might have occasion lo go through the alley although as an additional addi-tional precaution a man was stationed at the entrance of the alley to warn I people and lanterns were placed about the place at dark In Mr Pypers Judgment It will not be necessary to tear down all of the lean to He will consult with the Building Inspector > in regard to tho matter today before the work of repairing re-pairing is begun It is the intention J I to remove as much of the damaged walls as necessary to make the build ing absolutely safe and a new wall of brick with a substantial stone foundation founda-tion will be built Mr Pyper has had in contemplation for some time past a plan with regard to additions to bp made to the Theater building but had not submitted his Idea to the directors The plan proposed pro-posed was to build at the northwest I corner of the main building a three story structure a part of which would be utilized as dresslngrpoitis scene I rooms propertyrooms etc while tho engines could bo Installed In the basement base-ment In this connection he suggested tearing down the leanto and erecting In Its place a good brick business block but this plan 1 will not be put in execution execu-tion at least at present The statement that a wall of the Theater proper had fallen In was wired out yesterday morning and as a result re-sult Mr Pyper got a telegram from the manager of Henry Miller asking If the company would play In the other house Mr Pyper wired back that the Theater was as solid as the rock of ages He also sent word to the New York agents of the house that the building was all right Mr Pyper stated last evening that the accident had resulted in diminish ing the attendance at the house last night It seems some people got the t Idea that one of the walls of the Theater The-ater building proper had fallen which I was of course erroneous The part damaged Is forty feet away from the r rear wall of the main building The back of the stage is the back wall of the main building so that the damage dam-age Is away back of everything There Is nothing but the old greenroom the sceneroom the carpenter shop and I some dressingrooms in the leanto The leanto Is separated from the main I building by a fireproof wall designed I especially to protect the Theater prop er and those who have had nervous t I apprehensions about entering the main building may be assured that the I structure Is as safe as it was before the wall fell The main building la I I built of solid stone up to a height of I thirty feet from the ground and froth I I that height upward Is heavy adobe Mr Pyper Is convinced that the accl dent was caused by the rain walcr soaking In between a retaining wall I of brick In the alley and the adobe of which the leanto was built |
