Show EIGHTHSHADE STUDIES N Changes Recommended at a Meeting of Teachers and Superintendent A meeting of eighthgrade teachers with Superintendent Cooper was held yesterday afternoon at which Sir tfdoper made known Hhc results of the work of the advisory committee which was appointed some time ago to i confer with Mr Cooper upon matters relating tothe course of study for higher high-er grades Tl Is thought that more time gades should be given to the study of history as at present outlined and that at least one and onehalf years should be devoted de-voted to the regular history work or if i that Is impossible that less attention should be given to some parts of the work now emphasized l was the thought of the committee that civics should receive much more time than the present course allows In arlth rrtetlc some oc the less Important topics should be omitted I was the consensus consen-sus of opinion that there should be more work In literature in the grades and that at least one other clasalc should be added f In spelling only words in general use and such as arc needed by persons of I ordinary culture need ba dwelt upon Many words are of little value aside from being acrobatic feats said Mr Cooper The committee recommended more old analysis and study of synonyms syno-nyms In eighth grades paying moro attention at-tention to the way our words are made up upTho matter of promotions was then discussed The form of certificates to be used for eighthgrade promotions will probably be simplified Notice of the methods of work characteristics char-acteristics and ability of pupils pro1 moted to the high school Is to be sent to the high school authorities This plan was pursued last year and was found to be of great value to all concerned con-cerned |
