Show CONSUMPTION TREATMENT I Is not generally known but the Government has an experimental hospital hos-pital In New Mexico 1pr the treatment ot consumptives The Philadelphia North American has a full account of I the points of which condensed arc as follows It la i said that the reports from those hospitals would be a revelation reve-lation to mdclical men and those who I have made a specialty I of devising I means for combating consumption 1 The attention of the Government was called to the fact that the death rate from consumption was less In New Mexico than any other locality in the United States First Assistant Sur geonGeneral J O Cobb of the marine service was detailed by SurgeonGen eral Wyman tovisit Arizona and New Mexico In isis and Inspect unoccupied I Government lands and unoccupied military itary posts for the purpose If possible of finding available sites for the location loca-tion of a hospital or hospitals where experiments on n large scale might be essayed Fort Stanton and Fort Bay ard were selected finally as the most desirable points the first as a navy hospital for consumptives and the second sec-ond for the uses of the army Temperature Tem-perature natural surroundings water supply and other considerations combine com-bine to make both locations ideal for the purpose At Fort Stanton the temperature tem-perature ranges from IS In winter to 95 In summer never exceeding the latter point Itp altitude Is the same as that of Colorado Springs and Las Vegas while the average yearly rainfall Is 173 inches Insuring against danger from drought The location pf Fort Bayard is not less favorable The records show that since the establishment of the hospitals hos-pitals the experiment has succeeded surprisingly well At Fort Bayard there are now121 patients more than thirty have left tho hospital cured others have sufficiently recovered to resume their occupations while others have evinced such n marked Improvement as to warrant the expectation that they will ultimately recover A few patents have died A majority of these were so far gone when they came under treatment as to render their chances more than desperate |
