Show NEW YORK POLICE SCANDAL BOARD CONSIDERS OHABGES MADE BY BISHOP POTTER Chief of the Force is Directed to Cause a Rigid Enforcement of AlLows Laws New York Nov 19Thc Police board met at headquarters today In special session to consider a letter sent t the board by Mayor Van Wyck in regard to the charge made by Bishop Potter i All the members were present except Commissioner Hess who Is ill The board preferred charges against Inspector I In-spector Adam Cross and Capt Hcrllhy Hcrllhy Is the captain who Is said to I hao made an Impertinent reply to the Rev Mr Paddock of the ProCathe dral who asked for Information The board sent a letter to Bishop Potter In which It states that the bishops letter to Mayor Van Vyck had been received I and saying To the end that proper charges maybe may-be formulated against the officers complained com-plained of the reparation of which necessarily requires a specific statement state-ment of dates and times of alleged offense of-fense and fO persons against whom the offense was committed we respect fully request that you cause to be submitted sub-mitted to us for tho use of the Police board the name of the person or persons per-sons against whom the offense was committed the dates or date of its oc rcncd and the language used as nearly as may be Upon the receipt of such information Informa-tion charges will be formulated and preferred against these olllcers who may be named The practice of the police has been to permit the appearance I appear-ance of counsel for the parties making complaints on the trial had against a member of the force In this case however there is no desire that the complaint should be made by the party to whom the alleged Insult was given the Police board preferring the charge It will however permit as It most crncbtly requests that you designate pome counseloratlaw who Wi 1 represent repre-sent you In the prosecution of this complaint com-plaint and If In his Judgment It Is deemed best the form of complaint may b drafted by such counsel In reference to the statements contained con-tained In your communication as to open and public lolation of law and discipline In the neighborhood of the ProCathedral the board has taken I action thereon I Tho following resolution was also adopted Resolved That the Chief of Police be and is directed to cause a rigid enforcement en-forcement of all laws and ordinances throughout the city of New York and that lie give to the same his personal attention and Insist on a rigid compliance ance jvlth this resolution on the part of every flTheFlh the hrthfc lard that he will adopt such measures a will enable him to be assured that the requirements of this resolution arc complied with and when a failure to I I BO comply exists he Is required to at once prefer charges against the delinquent I I delin-quent persons After the adjournment of the Police board It Is said a misunderstanding arose between Chief of Police Devery and President York At headquarters It was intimated that charges of as serious a nature a those against Inspector In-spector Cross may also be brought against Chief Devery The latter has r used to remove Cross or Herllhy from duty pending the hearing of the charges against them and In doing this he has Incurred the displeasure of President York |
