Show RETURNED FROM NOME E D WATERMANS VIEW OF CONDITIONS THERE Ho Says Reports of Sickness and Death Are Exaggerations Easy to Get from tho Cape E D Waterman reel from Nome Tuesday night In speaking of his trip yqsterday Mr Waterman said I was at Nome from June llth to Augustj 14th The heavy losers In the enterprise are tho owners of mining outfits of Wcry conceivable kind which cost all the way from 3COO to 50OOQ each The gold on the shore has been mostly worked and but little can be done along the creeks this year on account of low water There Is mining there to support sup-port a town of 1000 people and that Is I all The town sprang up like a mushroom mush-room and prices were Inflated at first but now values arc about normal The reports of sickness and the death rate are an exaggeration I knew of only one alleged case of smallpox while I was there and even that was doubtful Pneumonia vas quite prevalent but that was caused by carelessness The country Is a healthy one The worst drawback was from the lack of courts and while nearly every claim of value was In litigation there I was no Federal Judge there until just before I left The soldiers In most instances in-stances were corrupt and would help the one that would give them the most money The people are leaving rapidly and there Is I no danger of suffering next winter as all can return who want to do so If they have not the money to pay their passage the Government boats will bring them for nothing The return farels now cheap and the Oregon Ore-gon brought passengers to Seattle on its last trip for 310 I |
