Show RECEPTION TO MR HENRY Annual Function at tho First ME Church For the fifth successive year Rev Alfred H Henry has been chosen pastor y pas-tor of the First Methodist church of this city and the annual reception of ti the congregation to the pastor was held ii S in the church parlors last evening and i the annual rollcall showed a gratifying iii growth The membership of the church has increased more than 300 during that period that Is more than 300 new members mem-bers have been received into tueS I S church Meanwhile more than 200 letters let-ters have been given to members leaving leav-ing the city and the church still enrolls IDO 1 The membership at the time Mr i Henry took charge was 235 The net gain In mcmlwrship for the past year i wa about seventylive c Judge George P Goodwin presided at r last nights meeting and in behalf of the church extended to the pastor the most cordial greeting pledged him the hearty support of every member of tho church In his work for the coming year and said that the church entered upon the new year with every assurance 5 ance of success uplrltuu1 material and jfts financial Rev Mr Henry responded briefly to the words of welcome expressing tho p deepest appreciation for the hearty cooperation ji co-operation any loyalty ot the members i3 of the church In the past and assuring 4 them that without such aid and support his work would have been In vain He said a church must be a force and In order to be a force must know its own 1 power and be able to direct Its energies and activities He expressed the belief i that the First Methodist church had a r wonderful future and said It would i only be a question of time when tho 1 old church would be torn down and amore bj a-more commodious one erected In Its place In closing Mr Henry said that I his highest ambition was that the Firs church should be a lifesaving station In this city and Its members lifesavers life-savers for those who arc drifting and have drifted away from godly influences P Influ-ences 11 Durngthe evening an Informal musical musi-cal programme was rendered pleasing I numbers being given by Mrs Plurnmcr c MIna Pond and Mr Wesley Davis Prof I Pedersen and Miss Elizabeth Davis i4 were the accompanists i After a season of handshaking and i cordial welcomes to the pastor and his wife delicious refreshments were f served and a social time enjoyed |
