Show WYOMING FOREST FIRES General Land Office Agent Reports Fighting Them Cheyenne Wyo Aug iSpccial Agent M B Carnplir oC the General Land office arrived neve today from southern Carbon county where hd has been superintending the work of fighting fight-ing foreset fires for several weeks Mr Cjvmplln state that the fires arc nov under control A majority of the conflagrations con-flagrations have been extinguished altogether al-together and thosenow burning arc being be-ing kepi confined Mr Cnmplln states there have boon nine disastrous fires In the State the first one having broken out last Juno In Doggetts Park Cob and extending over the line Into Wyoming Other fires sprung up quickly In different parts of the Stale but the most serious of these were In the Grand ISncampment und Battle Lake mining districts The largest of thes was on the north fork of Encampment creek and was three miles wide by nine miles long Thousands Thou-sands of feet of valuable Umber were destroyed together with a number of sawmills sheep camps and miners cabins cab-ins So far as known there was no loss of lIfe The severest loss sustained hy any ono firm was that of the Kennedy fiawmUl The entire plant was burned down entailing a loss of 8000 While fighting the fires Mr Camp lln had a force of 2GO men employed day and night at a cost of S2iOO Yesterday warrants were sworn out for four sheepherders who are charged with criminal carelessness in handling campfires These men will be arrested as soon as Marshal Hadsell returns from the chase after the train robbers Mr Camplln says that many of the fires were set by sheephcrders through their careless handling of campfires and In some instances he believes the work was intentional In order to provide pro-vide more grazing room for the herds next summer |
