the spirit of It I wits not aware that you and my othtir friends who joined you In the letter cared what political part I affiliated with hence the letter was a pleasant surprise To part politically with myoid friends and associates with whom I have been Identified ever since I was old enough to take an interest ia the principles anti policies of our Government Govern-ment and turn my back to the party whose doctrines I have always advocated advo-cated and defended and whose mis i takes and failures have so often been compelled tp apologize for required no small amount of courage and willpower vancemont the Democratic party has been and Is the party of opposition and faultfinding The Democratic party falls the Republican party succeeds I The Democrats talk the Republicans act The Democrats face and cling I to the past and are prophets of evil tho Republicans unshrinkingly meet and solve and overcome every problem 1 however difficult and with hope and confidence contemplate the future grandeur of the Republic The Democrats Demo-crats regard and speak of the flag as the emblem of oppression despotism and Imperialism the Republicans look upon and refer to it as the Insignia of liberty Justice good government and peace on earth good will to I man The Republican r party has made all there Is of the last forty years of our countrys history to he proud of the Democratic party has made all I there Is in It to be ashamed of The Democratic party by Its opposition and faultfinding has accomplished some good It has made the Republican party more IrreIstlble In Us onward march The Democratic party In American politics has answered the purpose that the old orthodox hell has In religion It has stimulated and Infused life Into the good I would have been with you four years ago but the direful predictions I predic-tions made by the Democratic press and stump orators that the then hard times would continue and In a much more aggravated stato In case the reins of government should be taken from the Democratic party and transferred trans-ferred to the Republican parly coupled with thp fact that I had always been taught Democracy from the cradle caused me to pause and hesitate The Democratic party In the meantime failed to embrace the only opportunity it has had for forty years tho Cleveland Cleve-land reign excepted to redeem Itself by upholding the flag and standing by the Administration In Its endeavors to maintain the national honor unsullied In the Philippine Islands by 1 establishing establish-ing there a stable form of government govern-ment and thereby maintain law and order and enable the Inhabitants to enjoy the blessings of liberty peace and good order Instead of turning them over to the tender mercies of that bribetaker and traitor Agulnaldo for pillage rapine and assassination In violation of articles IV X and XI of the treaty which was favored by Mr Bryan arid which brought the Islands under the sovereignty and made them a part of the domain of the Unlluil States Observing hits T found myself unable any longer to affiliate with that party How a Democrat pan quietly anti by his silence tacitly approve what ban been done by the Democratic party I In I North Carolina In diafranchislng many of the citizens of th it State and tacitly indorse what hits taken place in Kentucky Ken-tucky within the last year and at the same time be loud In blu denunciations of the course pursued by the Administration Admin-istration In the Philippine Islands Is I to me Incomprehensible Yours i truly Signed GEORGE H CROSBY I |
