Show I i PITIFUL PLIGHT OF A STRANGER i Otto Biglow a Sorely Maimed Cuban Filibuster Applies Mo the I Board of County Commissioners for Aid With a hole In the top of his head through which the pulsations of the brain were visible one hand and arm twisted out of shape one side partly paralyzed two fingers gone from the othor hand and clad in rags OUo BIgelow a man about 35 appeared before be-fore the County Commissioners yesterday yester-day an unwilling supplicant for aid With reluctance to ask for the assistance assist-ance he sorely needed he told a pitiful tale During the SpanishAmerican war he played the part of a filibuster he said and ran the blockade seven times landing ns many cargoes of ammunition am-munition and arms In Cuba for the Cubana in their tiGht with the Spaniards Span-iards for liberty He also said he had been instrumental in organizing regiments regi-ments of rough riders In Texas and In Colorado for service against the SpanIards Span-Iards When running the blockade he got shot all to pieces by the Spanish guns then somewhat recovered he made his way to San Francisco and was there taken care of in the military hospital but three weeks ago was din charged and came to Salt Lake penniless penni-less Since lclng here he scarcely knew how he lived He had eaten very Pol I I dom and mostly slept out He had no friends here and not being enllstsrl In any army organization had no claim on the Government Several years ago ho lived at Sandy but had no relatives there He however had friends in Omaha and thought If he could get there they would do something for him He had beer told that art operation to raise the bones of the shattered skull which were pressing on tho brain might relieve the paralysis from which he suffered I His case was so pitiable that even Commissioner WThi taker who has the reputation of being more Impervious to hardluck stories than any of his colleagues was touched He suggested that tho exarmy hoys and others might make a collection and send him to a hospital here The unfortunate fellow however shrank from being an object of charity In that way but It I was evident something ought to be done for him and In the meantime he was sent to the county Infirmary |
