Show JONES SAYS TO FALSE Denies That His Company 5 Has Sold Out STILL AFTER A FRANCHISE The Story of D S Murray of the Bell Company That Ho Bought the Homo Company Out Is Branded by Jones as False in Every Particular Jones Explains Legal Service Rendered for Murray and for jVhicli His Receipt Was Given Will Continue Fight for Franchise The statement of David S Murray of the Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone company to the effect that I as ioprc Kcntatlvc of the Home Telephone company com-pany agreed for a consideration or 250 or liny other sum to quit the Held hero Is an absolute falsehpocl and has no foundation whatever We are still in the field and we propose to secure a franchise If possible and install a modern telephone system In Salt Lake City b This is the statement of Elmer Jones attorney and local representative representa-tive of K W Hammer of Chicago whose application for a franchise to install and operate a telephone exchange ex-change in this city is now pending be lore the City CounciL The statement of Jones was made last evening in reply to the charge of Mm ray that the Bell peqplc had bought out both rival concerns for 5a00 STATEMENT OF JONES Continuing Mr Jones said Now that Mr Murray has exhibited a receipt re-ceipt which I cave him and falsely stated thai the amount specified was paid to me as a consideration for the Home company agreeing to withdraw from the field I feel that I am war rantcdlln telling just what the receipt was for and other matters connected with IL Shortly after the question was raised in the City Council as whether or not the Bell company had afran chlse Mr Murray talked to me on various occasions concerning the matter mat-ter Finally along in the latter pan of April he came to me and said that ho was a little uneasy concerning the status of his company as to afran chise and wanted to know If an ai rangement could not be made for the purchase of our franchise in the event that we secured one WHAT THE MONEY WAS FOR I told him that I was acting for Mr Hammer and could not enter into any agreemnt of that kind Murray then asked me if I could not go to Chicago and discuss the matter with Hammer and at the same time asked me what 1 would charge I told him that I would charge 250 and Murray said he would sec about It On May 1st I think It was the day I left the city for the East Murray came to my ollice with 250 In cash which he handed me together with a bill for the services and a receipt for payment which I signed S 11 then went to Chicago where 1 told Mr Hammer everything connected with the matter Hammer declined to do anything relative to It and I immediately im-mediately notified Mr Murray of that fact by letter arid supposed that the incident was ended JUtE STILL IN THE FIELD The next I heard of the matter waa when I learned that Murray had ex hibited thereceipt and made the statement state-ment that I had sold out to the Bell people for 5250 Mr Murrays statement state-ment is false la every particular We are still in the field and we arc Just as anxious to secure a franchise as we have ever been and the moment that the Council grants us a franchise that we can accept we are ready to tile a bond In the sum of sis nnn m nnv other reasonable amount that we writ Install the plant Just as soon as the work can be done Any sane man ought to view with suspicion the statement state-ment that we have sold out for 250 as we have expended over 3000 As to any agreement that may have been reached between Murray and the Wa terbury people I know nothing Mur rays statement however that he made the SOf > offer to me in the presence ot the icpresentativcs of the other com pany and that It was accepted is ab solutely false and nothing that would form a basis for it ever occurred Murray simply realized that our chances of securing a franchise wcio good and he attempted a desperate game in my absence which he hoped would encompass our defeat We arc still In the field we propose to put forth every honest effort to se cure a franchise and when we secure It we will at once begin work on our exchanges |
