Show Greeks Loot a Protestant Church. Athens, Feb. 17. During the' scrvi-e at the Protestant church at Piraeus, a mob forced its way to the interior of tiie building and severely maltreated the minister and au-dicucc. au-dicucc. They stole everything of value iu the church and then set fire to it, gutting the interior. Troops were hurriedly sent to the. scene and a number of tho mub arrested. The Crttirch was built by Knglish and Ameri. calls, but the minister connected with it are fjreers. The mob also attacked and wrecked the parsonage. The British Foreign Bible society intends to claim compensation for the. outrage from the Greek government. Many of the rioters were, masked. The mob pursued the members of tho congregation to their very doors, and even demanded of the British consul that they be surrendered. There is no doubt that, had tl.ey fallen into the mob's hands, the congregation would have been killed. |
