Show 0 ALFRED J SETTLES BETTLES alfred J bettles of salt lake city died thursday afternoon august 3 of peritonitis and eure euremio illic poisoning resulting from an operation for abscess for many years mr bettles has been prominent in mining milling and business circles in the west thirteen or fourteen of which were spent in utah with salt lake as his residence and headquarters where he has been most widely known and greatly respected and esteemed an englishman by birth lie he moved to ontario canada while yet a young man and finally landed in colorado where he engaged in mining pursuits later on he was interested in the same industry in montana where lie he achieved a most enviable reputation as an expert mine operator millman and metallurgist from montana mr bettles moved his family to salt lake and for a number of years was on the engine engineering ering staff of samuel newhouse his energies being devoted to ore determinations ore dressing and mill during this period he designed and constructed the cactus mill at newhouse and the boston consolidated mill at garfield the latter at the time being the largest plant of its character under one roof in the world since his resignation from the newhouse staff mr bettles has been engaged in professional fessio fess ional naI work and in the direction of his private affairs As a millman and metallurgist he had no peers in the west and but few equals he was a member of the american metallurgical congress the american metallurgical society the alta club and the commercial club and was a mason of high standing at the time of his death he was president of the united grocery company of the carsol mining company and the stonewall king mining company in addition to which lie he was interested in a number of other enterprises including the assay office and metallurgical works of betties and bardwell mr bettles whose untimely death occurred at the age of fifty five when he was in the prime of middle age is survived by his wife and four children who are stricken with grief at the unexpected summons he was a man of exceptional qualities of heart and mind a man of sterling worth and splendid attainments he was greatly beloved by all who knew him for his genial and kindly disposition for his generosity his nobleness of soul and his demise will be keely felt in his home circle throughout the mining sections of tile the west and in social and business circles in salt lake city MR 4 Y vil alfred J bettles to his wife his children his relatives and immediate friends the mining alining review extends the deepest sympathy 0 |
