Show COMMENT ON UTAH MINES AND PROSPECTS to judge from the transactions on the salt lake stock exchange for the past two weeks one would be led to believe that nothing was doing in the mining industry of the state the board to a certain extent I 1 is a reflex of mining conditions and it is undoubtedly the fact that in many of the properties whose stocks are listed on the exchange but very little work is being carried on the nature of which would cause any great activity in their shares still we have often noticed that mine conditions which should warrant great activity in the stock market have not resulted in any appreciable prec preci able lable gain A big strike for instance has resulted in a steady decline in stock quotations while upon the levying of an assessment rapid gains have been chronicled such opposite effects from what might inight have been expected would lead to the conclusion that the market is often manipulated to the detriment of the mining industry and of mining properties ana enterprises now and then however there seems to be some equality between mine conditions and stock quotations at the present time stock quotations are ridiculously low and the sale of an entire capitalization would not pay for even surface improvements even though the property affected had an abundance of ore in sight and was shipping regularly il this being the case it would seem as if the investor was being given a rare chance to get in at low figures with almost a certainty that he could close out later on at a material advance for it is safe to predict that almost every security on the salt lake board will make gains of from 25 to 50 per cent within the next six months there is however a great deal of activity noticeable throughout the various mining districts of the state in big cottonwood district a large amount of work is going on and it begins to look as if this section could boast of two or more dividend payers before the close of the year well informed mining men who have recently visited the property of the utah mines coalition do not hesitate tri to predict that this will eventually develop into one of the largest silver lead mines in the state and they state as well that it certainly has all of the earmarks ear marke of a breadwinner bread winner the cardiff also has been most favorably commented upon of late and now that the upraise in this property has entered the bedded planes and the ore exposed in increased quantities it is reasonable to expect and believe that that this mine will also soon find a place in the divi bend paying column in various localities throughout the district a large amount of work is being done and of a very favorable character the article in the last issue of the mining review descriptive of the mines of the south fork of big cottonwood cotton wood was read with much interest by the constantly growing number of mining men meir and investors who are interested in big cottonwood district american fork district is also patting itself upon the back because of the important ore disclosures being made in that section in the pacific mine especially conditions would seem to warrant an increased stock valuation for the company is not only on the shipping list but the ore bodies are gaining in size as development work progresses gr esses other properties in this camp are reported to be in most satisfactory condition at alta affairs are in a reconstructive constructive re condition so to speak the change of management in more than one of its leading properties and the formation of new companies whose operations are still in an incipient stage leading to a period of almost enforced idleness in several instances when matters have been satisfactorily adjusted however it is safe to say that alta will more than come back into its own wilen an era of unwonted activity will be recorded there take the big cottonwoods Cotton woods alta and american fork canyon merge them into one district for they all three adjoin and it would be no idle boast to claim that no greater silver lead section exists within the boundaries of the state and time will prove that this is no idle dream the same belt extends south as far as santa quin where the union chief gives evidence of developing into a splendid producer and dividend payer without any stretch of the imagination the belt might be said to extend even still further south taking in mt nebo district where some very important silver lead discoveries have been recorded of late and in speaking of silver lead mines it might be well to reiterate the statement that this phase of the mining industry is looking very attractive to owners of properties of this character and for the reason that the demand for lead ores is increasing that the local smelters shelters sm elters are in keen competition for the product of such mines while the market is steady and the cost of operation is less than in mining for either gold or copper the utah consolidated at bingham is reported to be in better physical condition than has been the case for several years past the public made a mistake when it listened to outside and damaging reports regarding this property and in disposing or of personal holdings at a loss for the mine is now shipping steadily increasing quantities of an excellent quality of copper ore and at the same time tim e is outputting out putting about 1000 tons monthly of high grade lead ore to the tooele thoele smelter the latter being an asset that was not counted upon a few months ago other properties throughout the district are more than holding their own and the outlook for the district is most encouraging cou raging the quarterly report of the utah copper published elsewhere in this issue shows that this company is in a flourishing condition down in gold mountain district near kimberly the sevier miller coalition company is getting ready for active ore prodoc tion and milling operations the wine mine has been extensively developed during the past two years and it is reported that large bodies of a good grade of milling ore have been uncovered while the ton mill has been thoroughly overhauled and remodeled within the next six months the coalition should be turning out gold bullion galore in the same district is the old annie laurie recently taken over by L L nunn of telluride power company fame and it is hoped that under his management a resurrection of this famous old property will ensue and that it will once again take its old place in the ranks of regular producers and dividend payers at ophir the lion hill consolidated is giving a good record for itself while the cliff mine in the same section is maintaining regular shipments from which stockholders are expecting in the near future that dividend no 2 will be posted conditions in tintic gintic district remain practically unchanged it is reported that the may day has made a most favorable ore contract with the smelters shelters sm elters and that it will at once begin heavy shipments from its large bodies of low grade ore the uncle sam during the month of july shipped twenty two carloads of ore earning it is stated more than its regular quarterly dividend requirements quire ments for the past two weeks the showing at the utah consolidated has been such as to lead to active buying in the stock of the company some very interesting in work is being done at the beek beck tunnel and results are anxiously awaited the leading mines of the district are maintaining in regular shipments and a spirit of optimism prevails throughout the district |
