Show PHOSPHATE NEAR MARYSVALE deposit found in the near vicinity of marysvale Marys vale in virgin territory in the last issue of the mining review considerable space was devoted to a description of the alunite deposits existing near the edna crater at the head of cottonwood creek a few miles southwest of marysvale Marys vale utah the marysvale Marys vale region is one that is rich in its but it has been only recently that the fact has been demonstrated that besides gold silver lead copper and iron rare minerals and earths abound in that portion of the state the discovery of alunite near ne ar marysvale Marys vale has created widespread interest and this interest will be materially enhanced when it is generally known that deposits of phosphates have also been found in the marys vale district an and d in an entirely new locality from the alunite A special correspondent of the salt lake tribune in giving publicity to the phosphate discovery says two or three months ago a couple of prospectors arrived in marysvale Marys vale and after a few days of exploration selected as a place for attack a point across the river about two miles southeasterly from town owing to the volcanic nature of the locality and more particularly within the maze of vents and craters that extend for many miles along the river marking the east fault of this narrow valley it has been regarded as a hopeless field for prospecting but within the last few days rumors were current to the effect that those two seemingly tenderfeet tender feet had opened a body of mineral isome small samples of which were on exhibition in the stores yesterday in the interest of the tribune readers your correspondent hiked over to the new find which may become of considerable importance the only indication of the presence of any substance other than the lava is a narrow deposit of white cious material containing small and large pieces of volcanic rock ejected from the nearby vents the cious rock extends some five or of six miles up the river and is exposed in and near the bottoms of the numerous troughs that descend from the main range to the east the finer portion of the material is easily shaped and dressed and is used for building purposes find sodium phosphate the prospectors above referred to began an open cut in the hillside and have opened what promises to be a large deposit of sodium phosphate A five foot pothole to tle the east of the open cut shows a decidedly encouraging quantity of the pure beautifully crystallized mineral while the large open cut is impregnated with sodium phosphate the prospectors said they had had the material analyzed and were certain as to the identity of the mineral but the per cent contained in the matrix has not yet been determined excepting the volcanic boulders which which can be easily separated by screening the ledge or deposit material is soft and would readily respond to water as the simple extracting agent and the sevier river is distant not more than yards if it be proved that the large body of cious material which parallels the river contains sodium phosphate in commercial quantities and it now as if that were probable it will be a splendid addition to the potash industry of this locality which is now almost a certainty in potash locality another potash discovery was made here two or three months ago by frank el kin king a longtime long time resident of marysvale Marys vale but which has not been reported because the identity of the acrid mineral had not been determined it is now known to be potash but whether or not it is of commercial value is yet to be proved the deposit is very large and is situated in the AL manning Tanning creek canyon about six miles southeasterly from the denver rio grande station at this point the deposit is of volcanic origin and occupies a position well back within the arup tives and near the contact with the older rocks of the main range southern utah is yet in the air regarding the mystery of the Pali reah and lees ferry gold propositions the former plant has been froze up and the plant at the ferry so it is reported is idle while awaiting the completion of the steamboat which will transport the necessary coal froni the mouth of warm creek down the colorado a distance of thirty miles to the ferry in the meantime teams are hauling the coal from the mine a distance of fourteen miles down to the mouth of warm creek |
