Show COPPER OUTPUT IN 19 11 statistics and estimates received by the united states geological survey from all plants known to produce blister copper from domestic ores and from all lake mines indicate that the copper output from the united states in 1911 exceeded that of 1910 a and nd nearly equaled the record production of 1909 smelter production the figures showing smelter production from domestic ore which have been collected by B S butler of the survey represent the actual production of each company for eleven months and include an estimate of the december output the november figures for a few companies were not available and these companies furnished estimates for the last two months of the year according to the statistics and estimates received the output of blister and lake copper was pounds against pounds in 1910 and 1 pounds in 1909 refined copper statistics showing the output of refined copper by plants in the united states are not collected by the geological survey at this time figures published by the copper producers association for the first eleven months of 1910 indicate that the production of marketable copper by the regular refining plants from all sources domestic and foreign will amount to about 1428 pounds against pounds in 1910 imports according to the bureau of statistics imports of pigs bars ingots ingols plates and old copper for the first eleven months amounted to pounds and the copper content of ore matte and regulus imported amounted to pounds if the imports in for december were equal to the average monthly import for the first eleven months the amount of copper entering the united states for the year was about pounds against pounds in 1910 exports estimates based on figures for the first eleven months published by the bureau of statistics and also by the copper producers association indicate that the exports of copper will considerably exceed the exports of 1910 and that they may be as much as po pounds unIs stocks stocks of refined coper held in the united states on january 1 1912 are probably somewhat less than on january 1 1911 and foreign stocks are also less both domestic and foreign stocks have been materially teri ally reduced since the middle of the year consumption statistics showing the doi domestic deliveries for the first eleven months of the year as given by the copper producers association indicate a considerable decrease in domestic consumption compared with 1910 it may however exceed pounds prices the average quoted price of electrolytic copper for the year showed a further decline from the average for 1910 the average for 1911 was nearly cents a pound compared with 1274 cents for 1910 near the close of the year copper was selling at a higher figure the average price for december being materially above that for the year leading Copper Producing states arizona for 1911 arizona again holds first place among the copper producing states but the output will hardly equal that for 1910 viz pounds the bisbee district was the largest producer with an output of about pounds a market decrease from the pounds produced in 1910 A part of this decrease was due to the stopping of shipment by the shattuck arizona mine during the later part of the year development disclosed some new and important ore bodies in the district the calumet arizona and superior pittsburgh companies were consolidated and the new corn com pany began the construction of a new amel ter the copper queen co company added a calci ning and plant to its smelter plans were initiated for the coast construction st of a smelter by the shattuck ari zona company the output of the morenci metcalf district will probably show a slight decrease from the pounds produced in 1910 the arizona copper company has under construction a new smelting smelling sm elting plant at clif clifton ton I 1 the globe miami district produced about pounds compared with 27 pounds in 1910 the large increase is due to the production from the miami area the first unit of the miami mill started in march and successive units later five of the six being in operation at the close of the year large additions were made to the ore reserves of the district especially by the inspiration and live oak companies and important development work was carried on by other companies development was also active in the globe end of the district in the jerome district the output of the united verde mine wilf will show a slight d decrease e from the pounds produced in 1910 the decrease was due to difficult ties with the old smelter the united verde company has a new smelting smelling sm elting plant under construction the humboldt smelter of the consoli dated arizona copper company was operated till november and then closed the mineral creek district entered the 11 list of active producers during the year the first unit of the ray consolidated mill was started in march and at the close of the year five of the eight units were in operation A smelting smelling sm elting plant is under construction st ruction at hayden by the american smelt ing refining company this will be ready for operation about april 1912 the development and blocking out of ore was continued especially by the ray consolidated and ray central companies montana the copper production in montana will probably fall to pounds short of the output of pounds in 1910 this decrease Is due to the policy of curtailment adopted by the companies in the butte district extensive development was carried on in the butte district and especial attention was given to improving the mine equipment of the units composing the anaconda copper company this included the extension of the use of electric and compressed air power improvement in ventilation etc these improvements are expected to materially teri ally reduce the cost of producing copper michigan the production from michigan ranking third among the copper producing states will probably show a decrease of about 5 pounds from the production of pounds in 1910 this decrease can be attributed to the relatively low price of copper which caused some compan companies les either to suspend operations or to produce below their maximum capacity no unusual developments took place in the state during the year though several mines that have been under development made small productions utah the production of copper in utah in 1911 will show a decided increase over the output of pounds in 1910 the main output as in previous years was derived from the binham bingham bin ham district though the tintic gintic district contributed an important amount and the frisco district made a larger production than in 1910 the most important events of the year affecting the copper industry in this state were the completion of the bingham garfield railway connecting the mines and mills of the utah copper company and the remo remodeling deling and enlargement of this com banys mills A third unit of the ohio copper companas comp anys mill was placed pl aced 1 in n operation during the year nevada the output of copper from nevada will show a slight increase over the pounds produced in 1910 the main pro as in previous years was that tha t from the ely district by the nevada consolidated soli dated copper company the smelting smelling sm elting plant of this company was remodeled for tile the use of oil as a fuel instead of coal development was continued in the yerington district the mason valley mines company practically completed the construction st of its ton smelter at wabuska babuska and and the smelting smelling sm elting of ore from the district will probably begin early in 1912 california the production of copper from california will fall considerably below the pounds produced in 1910 this decrease can be attributed to the difficulty experienced by the shasta county smelters shelters sm elters in controlling the smelter fumes for this reason the balaklava Balak lala smelter was closed in july by order of the courts and remained closed for the rest of the year and the mammoth smelter was not operated at full capacity experiments are under way looking to the solution of the smelter smoke problem and it is hoped that these will prove successful but the district will hardly show a marked increase in output for 1912 I 1 alaska it has been estimated by the geological survey that alaska mines produced pounds of copper in 1911 this is by far the largest output ever made by the territory and is due to the beginning of production from the copper ri river ver district and the increased output from the prince william sound district the copper river railway was completed to the bonanza mine and shipment of ore began in april and continued through the year there Ther ewas was also marked increase in output of the mines of the prince william sound district tennessee the output of copper from tennessee will show some increase over the pounds produced in 1910 this increase is due to the enlargement of the acid plants connected with the smelters shelters sm elters of the ducktown Duck town district which permitted the smelting smelling sm elting of more ore the he production of sulphuric acid is now an important factor in the smelting smelling sm elting industry of the ducktown Duck town district colorado colorado contains no important copper district its main output of copper being incidental ci to the production of other metal it will probably show a decrease of about pounds from the pounds produced in 1910 1 idaho the production of copper froin idaho will probably show considerable decrease from the pounds produced in 1910 As in previous years the main output was derived from the snow storm mine in the coeur dalene district though the output from this mine was considerably less than in 1910 the lost packer smelter at ivers was operated for a short time and other districts contributed to the total for the state new mexico teh production of copper from new mexico will show no great increase over the pounds produced in 1910 the most important event in the copper industry of the state was the starting slanting in october of the first unit of the chino copper companas comp anys mill the remaining units of the mill will be placed in commission in 1912 and the santa rita district will become an important producer the chino company made important additions to its ore reserves and the mines were put into condition to furnish ore to the capacity of the mill the lordsburg Lords burg district was the only other important contributor to the copper output of the state outlook for 1912 several companies entered the producing list in 1912 with small outputs and will be important producers in 1912 most of the older companies are in a position to maintain or even increase their present output providing the consumption of the metal will perl permit mit |
