Show 0 A ROAD TO DEEP CREEK A railroad to deep creek the proposition is i not a new one by any means and for twenty years or more if we remember aright the subject has been discussed as regularly as has been bean the coming of christmas or the fourth of july sometimes if the season is propitious and the signs are right in the heavens or if the daily papers tire of long dissertations anent the ahe stockade or blue sunday laws a column or two is devoted to a resume of the advantages to be derived by the building oi of a railroad into deep creek so far however there has been nothing but talk it is true that preliminary surveys have been made and in some instances grade stakes have been set the only approach to a shortening of the distance to this land of gold silver lead and copper capper being the construction of the western pacific which on its way to the coast passes around the western oreline shoreline sn of the great salt lake and so comes a few miles nearer to this bonanza field than is the case with any other road from westover on the ithe western pacific a stage ride of a day will jand land the traveler at gold hill one of the leading camps of this wonderfully rich mineral section the deep creek region has been greatly in need of railroad facilities for many years and the need is greater today than ever before newspaper talk will not build it nor hot air but a constant reminder of the possibilities of this country cannot help but keep the matter before the people who can build it and wilo who certainly will at no distant day and railroads are being built today into localities isolated and distant that are not possessed of naif h a if the potential advantages offered by the deep creek country the deep creek region Is not a small section of country environed by great stretches of waste as many believe belaev e on the contrary it embraces at least five or six great mining districts any one of which should be able to guarantee a large and regular tonnage of ore to a railroad building that way As a matter of fact there is one mine at gold hill probably two of them which could send out almost a trainload of ore at least weekly were facilities provided in addition the country is dotted with ranches and the meadows in the valleys provide hay for the feeding of stock which range the hills in the summer time although isolated it is not a new country by any means on the contrary it is self supporting and progressive up to the point where lack of transportation stands like a wall between the ranches the mines and the outside world deep creek is a great country most of us knew this twenty years ago or more and we are as confident of the fact today as we were then by all rights it should have railroad facilities should have had them long ago A branch south from wendover over a country almost as smooth as a floor could easily penetrate a region that would soon become known as a second leadville a second goldfield or a second butte A branch from the san pedro road could easily get into the same region both roads have had engineers in the field one may build almost at any day perchance and stranger things have occurred both may duay get there about the same time from deep creek a short line would carry the road into ely the possibilities are great we all recognize this but |
