Show NEW DISTRICT IN IDAHO idaho long neglected as a mining field has been making remarkable strides to the front during the present year and a number of new and important strikes have been reported within its boundary lines the latest discovery being in the neighborhood of weiser concerning which the agnal of that place says this section is in the throes of a mining excitement and a stampede is likely to result already twenty five or thirty persons from weiser have gone to the scene of the strike and more will follow ontario has also been struck by the fever and about half the population of that place has left for the new gold field to make locations the district is located about fifteen miles southeast of weiser at the head of what is known as moores hollow and is on the divide between moores hollow and willow creek the country in that section is exceedingly cee rough with numerous gulches and cliffs the section in which the discovery has been made is two or three miles wide and extends to the snake river the first discovery was made on june by levi henshaw of this city and charles stewart a resident of willow creek who is employed by a mr hoskins of that section stewart has had considerable experience peri ence in mining having spent a number of years in alaska and other mining sections these gentlemen located a claim and begun sinking at a depth of a few feet they encountered a solid ledge of mineral and taking some samples sent two to tacoma for assay they were astonished to receive returns on one of 18 per ton gold and the other per ton gold samples have been sent out by other parties and assays essays received none of which went below 20 per ton and several mr henshaw informed the signal representative senta tive that the ore appears to be a mixture of black sand and granite that has solidified until it has formed into ledges the ore lies in a blanket formation it is encountered within a few feet of the surface and has been cut into ten feet without going through the formation mr henshaw is of the opinion that the district was the ottom bottom b of a great lake at some remote period and the ingredients in the bottom of 0 it have conglomerated into a solid mass he and his partner are making arrangements to develop their property it is stated by old residents that several years ago a mining excitement existed for a time in that section but died out at that time parties found float rock there that was covered with free gold at points further south and west are sections that have been worked profitably for a number of years it is stated that up to monday after noon more than fifty claims had been located in the district principally by weiser people the discoverers kept the matter very quiet and the discovery did not begin to leak out until monday when parties from ontario begun telephoning to weiser for information regarding it the district is easily accessible from this city automobiles making the run in about two hours |
