Show the tooele thoele smelter of 0 of the international company by will C higges in its july issue the mining review made mention of the blowing in of the tooele thoele smelter of the international smelt ing refining company on the of the same month the first fire in one of the five of the furnaces being kindled by governor wm win spry the event being witnessed by manager E P mathewson and his engineering staff invited guests from salt lake city and a large number of too ele citizens the going into commission of the tooele thoele plant of the international company marks an important epoch in the mining and milling history of utah and the west its completion divesto gives to the state four gigantic s smelling smelting sm in e elting 1 t i n g establishments the oth other erthree three embracing the murray and garfield plants of the american smelt ing refining company and the midvale plant of the united states company and with such splendid reduction works in the field utah is able to take rank as one of the greatest ore smelt ing centers in the united states on account of which the mining industry throughout this intermountain region should be vastly benefited as a competitive market is offered and every facility exists for ore treatment the tooele thoele smelter is situated near the mouth of pine canyon tooele thoele county utah it is distant six and one half miles from the tooele thoele station on the main line of the san pedro los angeles salt lake railroad and four and one half miles from the town of tooele thoele the smelter site being connected with tooele thoele station by the tooele thoele valley railroad which has a traffic agreement with the salt lake route the site of the smelter occupies an area of one half square mile work in the con 4 M 6 at A sair LAKE minina photo zy will C higging gov wm spry starting fire in furnace thoele tooele smelter st ruction of the plant was begun on december ath 1908 and much credit is due the management and his efficient staff for its speedy completion only thirteen months being consumed in rearing a stately and costly series of buildings and a network net work of railroad tracks where but a short time ago a desert waste existed primarily the tooele thoele smelter will treat the ores of the utah consolidated of bing ham utah and the south utah at new house utah while ample preparation has been made for the purchase and treatment of custom ores already the new tramway of the utah consolidated has been warming up in the delivery of ores to the smelter site from the companas comp anys mines in bingham canyon the ores so transported going into the huge bins at the tooele thoele plant for sampling after being sampled the ore is transported by belt conveyors conveyor S to the roaster building containing thirty two mcdougall roasters asters ro where it is and made ready for conveyance to the verber atory building from which the product in the form of matte going to the co converters n v e r t e r s finally finds its way to the casting department the various buildings comprising the smelting smelling sm elting plant were built with structural steel furnished by the american bridge blidt ge company of new york and erected by the oscar daniels company of chicago the steel used amounting to tons not count ing the tons taken from the old highland boy plant in salt lake valley in the construction of the plant yards of plain and reinforced re concrete was used the excavation necessary for the foundations made by steam shovel and teams amounted to yards the building of the main stack consumed brick the plant is divided into departments as follows sampling and crushing department mcdougall roaster department power plant department department blast furnace department crushing department is housed in a steel building feet the structure is five stories high with basement and two elevator pits below basement floor in sampling the ore is fed to a inch anch blake crusher the crushed ore then being elevated and a first cut of one fifth is taken for sample the sample is then run through a inch blake crusher and another cut is taken this sample is run through rolls and is cut again this cut is sent through rolls and the sample goes to the sample safe the reject from the first sampling goes through a tromm pl one half of which has 38 inch punched holes and the other half 1 inch the undersize of the 38 inch goes directly by robins belt conveyor to storage bins the oversize from the 1 inch goes to a blake crusher where it joins join the undersize from the 1 inch and the reject of the second sample cut the three products then going to a inch with ya inch holes the undersize is elevated and sent directly to the bins the oversize is passed through a inch roll and is also elevated to the bins the sampling works are in two units in duplicate from the bins the ore goes to the roaster or blast furnace bins according to character the blast furnace bins are feet long 26 feet 6 inches wide and 34 feet 6 inches high being built of steel these bins are fed by conveyors and drained into electric driven cars on the industrial system comprising seven miles of standard guage track constructed of 60 pound rails all within the smelter site on the industrial system the ore is crammed tram med in cars to the blast furnace the blast furnace bins have a capacity of tons the blast furnace building has been completed but the furnace has not yet been installed the roasting ore bin is feet in length and will hold tons the ore is drained into belt conveyors and taken company the other twenty two being taken from the old I 1 highland boy plant at murray the hot calcines from the mcdougall are crammed tram med on the industrial system to bins over the furnaces the smoke from the mcdougall ro asters passes through a brick flue into the dust chamber which is feet long feet wide and containing square feet net cross see sec tion area the chamber is hopper bottomed an and d discharges the dust into cars on three tracks on the industrial system running underneath the gases then pass through N a brick brck flue twenty five feet f in diameter at the top the reverie plant the plant embraces five furnaces of the anaconda type the hearth hearie dimensions being 19 feet wide by feet long the furnaces are coal fired the waste gases from each furnace passing through a horsepower stirling boiler the gases are then conveyed by brick flue directly to the stack the slag is skimmed into slag cars of cubic foot capacity and crammed to 0 o ane slag dump the ashes drop into cars at the back end of the furnace and are also crammed to the slag dump the matte is taken by launder into the converter building the converter plant the converter plant is feet known as the bleichert system and was built by the trenton iron works company of trenton N J the buckets hold 1000 pounds each and the carrying cap capacity acty of the tram is approximately tons an hour the speed of the rope is feet per minute the tram was built on an air line and over some of the most rugged country to be found in the west A detailed description of this tram will be given in a later issue of the mining review it is exec expected tea the toodie tooele smelter will be turning out pig copper by september 1st ast in the beginning it will treat but 1200 tons of ore daily when in
