vice president of the utah copper judge C L lindley chief of the legal staff for the guggenheim interests in the west J F P whitley general manager of the utah copper C B lakenan general manager of the allied interests in this district G L cannon general manager and T J duddleson superintendent of the nevada northern railway arrived at mcgill yesterday morning on a special train and after visiting the big plant at that place for several hours came to east ely late in the afternoon the special was composed of three private cars one of which the cyprus belonging to mr jackling is said to be one of the handsomest pullmans that ever drew into a station it is built entirely of steel and has an office and four separate staterooms state rooms the party spent last evening at east ely and will go to the mines this morning for a few hours inspection after which mr jackling will leave for cobre to catch the westbound train and will go direct to arizona to look over his holdings in that state through his connection with the utah copper he has become one of the big holders in the nevada con and this is his first visit here since becoming identified with the district mr jackling is now one of the powers to be reckoned with in the copper world he has had a meteoric career a monte cristo like rise in the last six years A college man he went into the mining game to learn it from the ground up and he has been most successful in his chosen profession six years ago he was in charge of a zinc smelter at canyon city having gone to colorado from salt lake while in th s position he was making the plans for the big mill of the utah copper and with the plans finished he returned to utah to take charge of the plant and mine from that time dates his accession of wealth and his rise to power he is said to be one of the biggest owners in utah copper one of the greatest of the low cost producing copper mines and was quite a factor in the merger of that property with nevada consolidated as far as the merger went mr eccles will remain several days longer and during that time will make a thorough inspection of the properties ibs with which he is prominently identified while at mcgill mr eccles informed a news representative that the proposed road to ward would in all probability be built by the nevada united mining company as the officers of that company had concluded to finance the building of the road themselves instead of calling upon the nevada northern to do it as was originally intended from reports I 1 have had concerning the nevada united said mr eccles that company has a wonderful property and we will arrange a freight schedule when the new road is completed whereby the company can ship its different grades of ore to market and realize a good profit according to mr eccles the schedule will be a graduated one and this will enable the company to market its entire production it is our intention said the president of the nevada northern to make our ore shipping rates as low as possible as we wish to encourage mining in this district and at the same time give us a chance to send our cars out loaded instead of empty as we are now doing when asked concerning the report that the amalgamated had taken over utah copper mr eccles stated that neither mr jackling nor himself had received any word confirming the newspaper reports and gave them no credence we have no intention to enlarge the steptoe plant at the present time said mr eccles as we are now able to handle from to tons of ore each day and as the plant at its present stage was intended to treat but one half this tonnage you can see there is no reason why we should increase its capacity at this time according to mr eccles the difference between what was originally expected of the mill and what is now being handled is due to a number of improvements made since its construction if present plans do not miscarry the new pit should be ready for production by the first of the year said mr eccles and this is considerably later than we figured on the delay being due to the non arrival of steam shovels which should have been here before now but which in all probability will not arrive before october 1 I 1 when asked as to the probability of the nevada consolidated curtailing its output mr eccles said there was no intention on the part of the company to make any such move as it was in a position to continue its present production and intended doing so mr eccles stated that the nevada northern will soon have two new engines one for the main line run and the other for the concentrator trestle seventy five new ore cars are due in the near future and when these are put on the run there will be no lack of transportation facilities for getting the ore from the mines to the steptoe plant according to mr eccles the ely district is attracting more attention from the mining world than any of the other big cop per producing camps and this is due to the up to date methods both as to the mining and treating of its ores after completing his tour of inspection in this district mr eccles w will ill go to his ranch in idaho where he expects to spend the greater part of the month of august |
