Show REGISTER AUGUST 27 Utah made a big step forward when the direct primary law was passed. Although there were some mistakes made by legislators in framing the bill, which will no doubt be corrected, the direct primary is big advance over the old convention method of selecting candidates. Every voter should check his registration on the last registration date, August 27, before the primary election on September 13. Sponsors of the law and those who supported support-ed its passage are anxious that voters show their interest in and appreciation of the privilege this system allows voters vo-ters in selecting candidates for office, by voting in the primary pri-mary and the run-off election. Machine politicians who have always opposed the direct di-rect primary will interpret any disinterest shown in the primary as encouragement to attack this progressive and fair voting plan when the expected and desired changes are proposed at the next meeting of the legislature. |
