Show c I WEBSTER SCHOOL ANU AL TRAINING EXHIBIT A FEATURE AT STATE FAIR An exhibit at the fair which attract attracted I ed cd perhaps more attention that was ever given to ah educational exhibit before Is the manual training work ork shown from the Webster school In this city Through an error it was wa stated that school secured the privilege of en entering entering entering Its Us exhibit at the fair by chance the decision having been made mad by lot Instead the work was chosen because it was better than any work c a sim ilar liar character done in the city schools The work is representative of the four upper grades and it has all been done under the supervision and three tion of Mrs M lr A Ivie Ivle the special teacher of or manual training in the Webster school The articles exhibited were made for the most part last year which was the third year of Mrs Ivies lyles teaching the subject It was chosen at the end of the school year and although all the pieces made by individual boys had been taken home they were gathered back ba k by b loans and taken to the fair for exhibition How did I come to choose such work worl rather than a ladylike specialty I said laid Mrs Ivie Ivle to a Herald representative tive tire laughingly Well I dont think I made a choice at all Rather I r had hadt hadit it t thrust on me and no one could have been more surprised at the results than I have been The first year of my work I simply followed the instructions Instructions instructions given to all the teachers of the subject under the th direction of Super Supervisor Supervisor Supervisor visor The following year ear I went to Columbia university and arid took tooka a special course in manual training and geography in which two subjects I have specialized ever since sincer III I r see no reason renson why any an woman could not make a success of such work There is no one subject which so arouses enthusiasm in the boys as does this one and If the results are so good goodas as to merit recognition they are due I to the boys in our school The exhibit is a unique one in every sense of the word The articles shown shon are all of or the useful kind and at the same time they are all ornamental In Inmany Inmany Inmany many respects they are original The designs have been worked out by b the pupils first of all and then the article made from wood In most cases the children have bought their own lum lumber lumber ber her choosing the material most suited to the article to be made and buying carefully from the measurements ob obtained obtained tamed This lumber has been treated as the needs of the article required with the result that despite the changes in the weather at the very beginning of the fair very few of the articles showed either swelling or ot o shrinkage An um urn umbrella umbrella brella stand made from an original de design design design sign by an eighth grade pupil had a little littie wooden pan to catch the drip which had been boiled in oil making it absolutely Impervious to the dampness A well constructed desk with all Its L 3 yS I IS Ic Ii J c i S S L J MRS M A IVIE lylE Special teacher of manual training in Webster School I pigeon holes complete is among the articles shown A chair two or three hall seats scats combining a seat and a box several handsome shoe blacking boxes that might adorn any boys b ys room hat racks han halt racks pic pie picture picture ture frames Ironing boards book bookcases cases music cases magazine shelve shelves plate racks and many more useful and beautiful articles are to be found |
