Freed wa named for the th theof of o head of c ri the d department e cpa p a lint hut Freed reed had never had hart any ex ox experience in the rac rae Lester M L 1 freed d ing ng ig sport At the tho time many man horse horsemen horsemen men Hien a failure for Freed claiming laiming that he did not know the th thame game ame But Fre Freed d had one thing more important than all the knowledge ever Ewer gained from a It dope sheet or on tho the thorace thorace therace race track and that is good common horse hor e sense This he used on any and ami andall andall all occasions ions and as a result stands tand forth toda today as the most mot successful pro promoter promoter promoter moter of the horse hone racing game th tile tho state lUte has Ita ev ever cr r known Freed started start l out with one thing In mind and lie hI has stuck to it from he the tart start His policy pol Ie has been to please se sethe the public and not run the races for forthe forthE forthe the benefit of o the horsemen Freed rca rea reasons sons Ions that the public pays for it arid antI Is 15 entitled to first fir t consideration As long longas as the people are satisfied the game will prosper but when they th become dissatisfied dl It is back to the plow for tor forthe forthe the horses hor es It takes tales money to make male the mare snare go amI the source of revenue must therefore be protected And AmI this is ju jut just t the policy poUl Freed has hR carried on ever evet 1 since he has had charge of ot the th state Stat fair races ra The Th director of speed at the fair is a firm believer in th the hurry up habit in running off races He makes the horses get fret oct out on time or there Is something do iT On last la t Friday Frida the writer alongside alon of Freed when lie he called ailed for forthe forthe forthe the last race rae on th the program The jockeys jocke s wre vre w re a little slow Freed placed the m megaphone to his mouth and called out I T will give you ou boys bos two tw minutes to get et out here Th Then n he pulled out a watch In sc se the time first boy was on the th track and on 00 minute and seconds second seconda after a t r the call was given im the tho th starting fiel field l was wa in front of the grand stand Freed also has the habit of his own department which is It another reason realOn for Its success The other di dl directors directors rectors ran can do as they the like Ilk with the pumpkins ins rows COWS and hut but nix on that little show on the track that attracts the thou thousands thousands sands who fro go 0 to the fair Sometimes life is not all joy jO for Free This is U when some me horseman has a plug plu which he h thinks is another Dan Patch or Lou Dillon and wants Freed to put on a arace arace race for his horse to win As soon sori as the 11 of anything begins be im to listen to a person who if is out for fr the money moley moue and there ther l I Ie soon poon poona soona a ft n reputation lost by b the wayside At this of or the ment Freed i Is generally there then with the nothing doing si sign n mid and then proceeds proceed to 10 put on oui It a race race which in his judg jud judgment ment will Ill please the The rhe re result 11 suit sult is a bigger iger crowd the next day da after his race hns has been h n run Tilt The horse hor racing r I ing game ame at the state fair his certainly hen hoen brought up to tn toa t ta a n Men standard from the tho spectators standpoint in the past t couple of years and th the credit belongs to the Ihie present director of th the d Hard on the Prize Fighter It is 1 mighty hard on the prizefighter when h n he hl Is l put rut on the sam same level with witha a politician hut It is surely a case to over when the prizefighter does buck up against the th politician and thereby th reb loses his meal ticket This is IR what happened down lown Wisconsin way t For som somo time the thC fight game has prospered per In the town mado famous by beer The Tue promoters thought It would be a good move moe to get et a couple of if mixers together to ether on the date William TaTt who wants to be president was slated for a political speech Governor Davidson was the th manager of the Taft show and all kinds of advance a vance dope of what his hit man could and would do o On the nIght of the tilt Taft T Ct bout the crowd was far below Im what the gov governor go governor thought a 1 man of his reputation should draw At the other show shoo whore where a couple of were doing doln things instead of talking about what hat they could ouM do eto the crowd packed the hall hail to th the doors When Governor Da Davidson looked look d over the Taft house he began in lii investigate the cause of the empty empt seats eats and blamed it td t the rival attraction The governors next om official cial act was to issue a stopping prizefights in the state of Wisconsin However the fighters have ha haon only on themselves to blame for ever descending to the level of a politician Grand Stand Play There will always be a contention cont between the time partisans of the Chicago o Cubs and the New York Giants over oer the outcome of o the t season just closed 7 J which gave Chicago the pennant Now New NewYork York fans ans will claim the Giants were robbed of the flag while Chicago ad adherents adherents adherents will vIll say the Cubs won it on their playing ability The loss of the pennant to New York falls entirely upon the shoulders of one of its players player Merkle Instead of playing baseball Merkle was playing to the thc grand grandstand stand and In his desire to show oft oit he lost losta a game which his teammates had won Merkle was the man who failed to go goto goto goto to second when the winning run was scored with a safe hit and thereby make the play pla safe by b touching the bag Instead Merkle Merkie went hiking off to the club house and Evers of at the Chicago team played the game gume by b call calling calling ing lug for the ball and forcing Merkle out by b touching the second bag It was hard luck for New York but it was baseball and anti the fans have no one to blame but the player at fault He Hc knew better beUer and should be given a seat on the tIme bench for life without pay pa pato to remind him of the time his grand grandstanding grandstandIng grandstanding standing cost COlt a million loyal lo al fans the pennant of the National League But from Cram the instant New York lost loft that game Chicago has been given the worst vorst of it on every decision made It seemed as if the entire executive force of the National League were trying tring to correct the mistake of or a player and turn over or the thc pennant to New Ne York With the score tied at the end of the ninth the umpire should have ordered the game ame continued If it could not be played on account of ot the crowd then the game should have been awarded to Chicago The Th day da the game should have hac geen played off Chicago was on hand and claimed the game by b default but Chicago was turned down Again the rules were broken The directors had no right to order the thc game same played after the close of o the season as it did If the teams were tied a series seri s of three games gaines should have been played to set settle settie tie ile the tie and not one game same Again the games should have been played play d on neutral grounds ground and not in New York where it is common knowledge a it visit visiting lug ing in team cannot get a square deal much less lees Chance and his Cubs It was hard luck for New York to lose out after they had the pennant won but Chicago Chica o should hould have been given a square deal after Merkle Merkie made his blunder Not Coach of Granite A communication was addressed to the writer from the student body of the Granite High school protesting against the statements that Cuddy Cudd Russell el one of the officials at last l st Sat Saturdays Saturdays Salt Lake High game was a coach of oC the thc Granite High HiSh Since the game it has been circulated that the High school lost the game for this reason In justice to the Granite High it should be said that Russell was not nor has ho lie ever been heen connected conn with the Granite High in any way iY shape or manner Further the same Cuddy Russell nu sell is one of the thc most capable of officials 0 officials in the state of oC Utah It also right might be ho stated that the decision which lost the th game pame for the Salt Lake High was not made by b Russell but was as made malIl by y the referee whose duty under the rules it was to pass PUi upon the ques question question tion of whether the tile piny was a touch touchback touchback back or safety Why Not Play in Utah It seems to be b the fad in Utah and anti has beci beel for some years to send many man of oC the tIme promising J g young athletes from local schools to eastern colleges just jUit justas as soon as lS they the begin to show any an great amount of ability in school sports This is not true in all cases but the writer could name nanie dozens doens of young oung men who have been sent to east cast eastern castern ern schools and apparently for no oth other other othor er or reason than that they have shown athletic ability The fact that Utah needs its own athletic young men to help the states leading educational educational educational institutions is overlooked entire entirely ly I and yet some sonic people are constantly casting slurs at the states university because bC it does not excel execl all other western colleges col in sports If It it was a question of better educational educational educational facilities there might be a rea rca reason reason son for it but it is not The only rea rca reason reason son seems to be a desire on the part of o the thc parents to see their sons name in print in some eastern paper as an athletic star They are not content to see him lead in his home state but prefer to have him him spend his energies in iii helping to make a reputation for some soine eastern c stern school that never has or never never will do Utah any good The parents are content to live lie here all an allright allright right and make their money here herc but for some reason that the writer can cannot cannot cannot not explain seem to think nothing in Utah is k I good enough for their children Just as long l ng as this spirit prevails just so 80 long will Ill the Utah schools have h ve to play second fiddle to the east |
