Show New Remkdy for Buuns and Scalds. Dr. G. F. Waters, of bos j ton, recently tested belore the meet- , ing of the Massachusetts Dontal society soci-ety a new remedy lor burns aud scalds, consisting of tbe application of bjcarbonale of Boda, the simple cooking Boda used in all families. The doctor dipped a sponge into boil ing hot water, and squeezed it over bis right wrist, the water flowing almost al-most completely around the arm, and nearly encircling it with a severe scald two inchea in width. Not content con-tent with this, he dipped the sponge a Becond time, and pressed it closely on the under aide of his wrist for thirty seconds. He then applied bicarbonate of soda to tbe scalded surface, and laid over it a wet cloth, and tbe intense pain was banished au if by magic. On the next day after this Bevere test, tho scald, with the exception of the part purposely made most severe, was practically healed, only a slight discoloration of the skin showing where the scalding water had flowed this, too, without a iec-ond iec-ond application of tbe soda. The flesh on the under side of tbe wriat bad been cooked down to tbe sweat glands, and the aoald was one which ordinarily ordina-rily would have caused an open and painful wound of long duration. The only treatment of this, however, alter the firs, application of tbe soda, was to keep the part moiBt with a wet cloth, and no pain waa experienced, and it was but a few days belore this severe wound waa Been to be rapidly healing. |
