General Howard, telegraphing from his headquarters on Clearwater, near Kamia, under date of July 27th, says: "I have asked to have the troops "at Missoula detain Joseph until I can strike his rear, the two companies at that point, with a little help from volunteers, being considered con-sidered ample, taking into consideration considera-tion the present demoralized condition of the hostile Indians." Howard's troop3 will push through rapidly. Another dispatch from the same point, under date of the 2Sth inst., savs the infantry, artillery and Jack son's company of cavalry are now across Clearwater waiting for Sanford. They will be ofl on tho Lolo trail by Monday, the 30th, at the latest, and General Howard will use every effort to cooperate vigorously with Gibbon. Another dispatch from General Howard, dated Sunday, the 29th, Bays: "All my column, with two days' rations, ra-tions, are cow south of Clearwater. The march will be made in tue shortest short-est possible time. Colonel Green is today one day's march tnis side ol Florence; Wheaton is at Lstviston. Everything is in the best possible condition for the present, and the capture of the enemy certain, providing pro-viding the Montana troops can check bia advance." |
